Opening 25-year-old baseball cards with Todd Coffey

Todd Coffey’s never not been entertaining. On the field, Coffey — who pitched for four teams across eight big-league seasons — became known for sprinting from the bullpen to the pitcher’s mound when he was summoned to a game. Off the field, he’s a colorful character too. You’ll especially know this if you read Jeff Passan’s book “The Arm.”

So open old baseball cards with Todd Coffey? Yep, let’s do it. The 36-year-old pitcher is this week’s guest in my Opening 25-Year-Old Baseball Cards video series, in which we crack open cards that have been sitting around, unopened, since my grandma bought them 25 years ago.

In this episode, Coffey runs the gamut of what’s possible in these videos — he finds a couple of his old coaches, finds a Hall of Fame player from his favorite team as a kid and pulls one of the best cards you could get back in 1992.

These days, Coffey is looking to get back into the big leagues after a second Tommy John surgery. In the past few years, he’s pitched in the minors and independent leagues, but he’s been in Arizona recently trying to earn a chance to pitch in MLB in 2017.
