One dead, two others hurt in shooting Tuesday night in Kansas City, police say

A man was killed and two other people were wounded late Tuesday night in what police were investigating as a single shooting incident in Kansas City’s South Blue Valley neighborhood.

The three gunshot victims were found at separate locations as officers were responding to an initial call at a Phillips 66 gas station and convenience store at 2911 Van Brunt Boulevard, Capt. Leslie Foreman, a police spokeswoman said near the crime scenes. All three were discovered within a few blocks and a few minutes of one another, Foreman said.

Around 9:25 p.m., officers were responding to a shooting call when they were flagged down by an adult female with a gunshot wound near the corner of 27th Street and Colorado and rendered aid. She was taken to the hospital with injuries considered critical as of Tuesday night, Foreman said.

The second victim was a man who entered the Phillips 66 gas station convenience store after being shot. He was taken to the hospital with injuries considered non-life-threatening.

In the 2700 block of Topping Avenue, police found a third victim in the street who had been shot. Foreman said the victim, a man, was unresponsive when officers arrived there and they attempted life-saving measures. He was later pronounced dead.

Detectives were still working to piece together the exact location of the shooting and what happened beforehand, Foreman said. She said based on the timing and proximity of the calls that detectives were fairly confident they all stemmed from the same incident.

Earlier Tuesday night, police reported that there could be as many as four victims. Foreman confirmed Tuesday night that there were three.

The killing was the second reported homicide in Kansas City on Tuesday. Just before noon a man was found fatally shot on a sidewalk in the Sheffield neighborhood near Wheeling Avenue and 8th Street.

Kansas City has seen 35 homicides so far in 2022, according to data maintained by The Star. Last year the city recorded 157 homicides, the second-deadliest year on record.
