One boy dead, another seriously injured in Pennfield Township crash

An 8-year-old boy was killed and a 4-year-old boy was seriously injured Friday in a single-vehicle crash in Pennfield Township.

Deputies with the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office responded to a crash on Struwin Road at 5:57 p.m. and found a vehicle had struck a tree and was fully engulfed in flames.

Nearby residents reached the scene before emergency personnel and had removed the adult driver and four children from the vehicle before the fire started. However, two of the children were seriously injured in the crash.

Deputies and other first responders attempted life-saving measures, but the 8-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene. The 4-year-old boy was transported to a nearby hospital and is expected to recover.

The driver, a 28-year-old Pennfield resident, who is the mother of the children, also was injured and is being treated at a local hospital.

The Calhoun County Accident Reconstruction Team is still investigating the crash. The ages of the other occupants of the vehicle were not provided.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Pennfield Fire Department, LifeCare Ambulance Service, and the Calhoun County Consolidated Dispatch Authority.
