Great Britain lost a talented young snowboarder and possible Olympian with the death of Ellie Soutter on Wednesday. It was her 18th birthday.

Soutter’s cause of death has not yet been disclosed.

The Oxted, Surrey native won Great Britain’s only medal during the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival in 2017, when she took bronze in the women’s snowboard cross. She also carried the British flag during the closing ceremony.

British Olympic Association chair Hugh Robertson and BOA Athlete Commission chair Ben Hawes released a joint statement mourning the loss of Soutter:

“Ellie was an incredibly popular and well-liked member of the team.

“Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this sad time”

Three weeks ago, Soutter was named to Great Britain’s senior team for the snowboard cross Europa Cup circuit and had been “tipped” for a spot on the Olympic team for the Beijing Games in 2022, according to the BBC.
