Why Bears' 'recipe for winning' is Montgomery, run game originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

The Bears are a win away from making the playoffs, and one thing is clear about their offense entering Week 17 and perhaps more games in January.

"You’ve got to run [David] Montgomery," Alex Brown said Sunday on the Football Aftershow. "It has to be Montgomery."

The Bears have scored 30+ points in four straight games — the first time they've done that since 1965 — and Montgomery has played a big part. The running back has tallied 426 yards on the ground over that span, including a pair of performances with over 100 yards.

The 23-year-old continued his run of success on Sunday against Jacksonville, tallying 95 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries in a 41-17 Bears victory. With a win against the Packers next week (or a Cardinals loss to the Rams) the Bears will clinch a playoff spot.

The Bears have won three straight games, and although two have come against teams out of the playoff picture, there's something to take away from the offense's recent success, specifically Montgomery's.

"I don’t know if Coach Nagy ever wants to say this, but you are a running football team," Olin Kreutz said. "That’s what you do — you run the football and you play defense and hope Cordarrelle Patterson gets you a big return.

"And if they get into the playoffs, this is their recipe for winning. This is their recipe for beating Green Bay next week, this is how they have to do it because you’re not going to outscore the No. 1 scoring offense in the NFL."

Added Brown: "I’m not in those meetings with them, so I don’t know how Coach Nagy feels, but it seems to me he wants to win with [Mitch] Trubisky being the guy. He’s not the guy, he can’t be the guy.

"It has to go through Montgomery, if you’re going to win with this particular football team right here."
