Oklahoma's Sooner Schooner out for the season after in-game crash

Oklahoma’s Sooner Schooner is facing retirement after a crash during the second quarter of Saturday’s game against West Virginia.

The schooner was celebrating a touchdown when a left turn it took to go back to the tunnel was a little too sharp. The schooner tumbled over and sent its occupants flying.

Thankfully, everyone involved in the incident was OK and the ponies were corralled as they were being very good ponies and running back to the tunnel without the wagon behind them.

An associate athletic director for the school told the OU Daily in a statement that the Sooner Schooner would not run again in 2019 because of the repairs it needs. The Daily notes this is the first Sooner Schooner crash since 1993.

"We will repair the damaged Schooner and its future use will be for static display," Kenny Mossman said. "It is possible that it will be back at a game this season, but it will not run. We also are in the process of having a new Schooner constructed. There is no timetable yet for when it will be ready. I would anticipate having it in time for the spring game."

Hopefully the ponies can still make some laps even though they won’t have the schooner behind them. Oklahoma still needs some fun way to celebrate all the touchdowns the offense will score during OU’s final two home games.
