We have a three-way tie for first atop the Big 12.

No. 6 Texas suffered its first conference loss of the season in a 38-35 loss to Oklahoma State. The Longhorns got to within three in the fourth quarter but a third-down touchdown run by Oklahoma State quarterback Taylor Cornelius with less than six minutes left sealed the upset bid.

Texas scored again with 1:45 left to cut the lead to three again. But Oklahoma State burned the clock with a first down after an onside kick was unsuccessful and Texas never got the ball back.

Oklahoma State jumped out to a 31-14 lead before halftime with the help of an interesting punt formation. The Cowboys sent multiple men in motion — including those lined up next to the center — and got Texas to jump offside for an OSU first down.

The shifting was dangerously close to a simulation of a snap. Players who move like they would at the snap are subject to a five-yard false start penalty. Texas coach Tom Herman tried to plead his case with the officials to no avail.

Four plays after the punt formation, and on another fourth down, Cornelius hit Tylan Wallace for a 36-yard touchdown pass for the 17-point halftime lead.

Herman irate near the end of the game

Texas defensive end Breckyn Hager tried to get to Cornelius as he was kneeling down to end the game and players came to Cornelius’ defense. As they gathered on the field, OSU coach Mike Gundy ran out to prevent a fight. Herman, apparently thinking Gundy was joining in, was furious.

The anger quickly subsided and the coaches shared a cordial conversation after the game. You can hear Gundy explain what he was doing and Herman appears to accept it.

The moment did produce this from Gundy, however. It could become a meme.

What the top of the Big 12 looks like now

The loss drops Texas to 4-1 in the Big 12 and in a tie with West Virginia and Oklahoma in the loss column. The Mountaineers were off on Saturday while Oklahoma steamrolled Kansas State. The three-way tie atop the standings with four games to go is important. One of those two teams won’t end up in the Big 12 title game.

And we’ll have a good idea of who the two top contenders for the title game are after Week 10. Texas meets West Virginia on Nov. 3 while Oklahoma visits Texas Tech. The Red Raiders could have been in a four-way tie for first in the conference but fell late at Iowa State earlier in the day.
