Oklahoma City guard Dennis Schroder leaves bubble for birth of second child
The Oklahoma City Thunder will be without guard Dennis Schroder for the foreseeable future.
Schroder left the NBA’s bubble at Walt Disney World to be with his wife ahead of the birth of their second child, coach Billy Donovan announced before their 121-113 overtime loss to the Denver Nuggets on Monday afternoon.
“It happened this morning, so he’s with his family at this point in time,” Donovan said, via The Oklahoman. “I’ll have a chance probably to talk to him and find out a little bit more, if not later today or tomorrow … We’ll probably be able to gather some more information once we get a chance to spend a little more time with him over the phone.”
Schroder was averaging 18.9 points and four assists per game this season for the Thunder, his seventh in the league. He put up 13 points while shooting 5-of-8 from the field in Oklahoma City’s first game inside the bubble on Saturday. The 26-year-old has one year left on that four-year, $70 million deal that he initially signed with the Atlanta Hawks before the 2017-18 season.
It’s not clear when Schroder will return to Florida, though he will have to quarantine for at least four days once he does before he’s allowed to rejoin the team. The Thunder have six seeding games left after Monday’s loss, and currently sit in sixth in the Western Conference standings.
“For me, it’s tough,” Schroder said before leaving, via The Oklahoman. “I love my teammates. I love basketball. But family comes first all the time.”
