Oilers to bring back coach McLellan

The Edmonton Oilers will bring back coach Todd McLellan for a fourth season after missing the playoffs with a 36-40-6 record.

McLellan, however, will return with a different staff. The team fired assistants Jim Johnson and Ian Herbers on Friday and reassigned Jay Woodcroft to coach its American Hockey League affiliate Bakersfield.

McLellan, 50, has a 114-109-23 record in three seasons at the helm of the Oilers. He led Edmonton to its first playoff berth since 2006 last season, where the team lost to Anaheim Ducks in Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals.

Overall, McLellan, who also coached the San Jose Sharks for seven seasons, has a 425-272-89 record in his NHL coaching career.

The Oilers made the decision to retain general manager and president of hockey operations Peter Chiarelli earlier this month.
