OHSAA Football Finals Replay: A look back at 2022 state championship weekend in Canton

CANTON — A lot of familiar faces gathered at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium this past weekend.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association football state championship games returned to town for the second straight year. A lot of recent champions came to town, as well as Ohio's 2022 Mr. Football.

Marion Local and St. Edward repeated as state champions, Mahoning Valley teams won a pair of titles and three teams became champs for the first time. The first-time winners included Glenvillle and it coach Ted Ginn Jr., as the Tarblooders became the first Cleveland Metropolitan School District team to win a football title. The finals kicked off Thursday night with Toledo Central Catholic holding off Hoban despite a big game by Mr. Football Lamar Sperling for the Knights.

    • Teams combined for just 72 yards of offense in Q1, with Kirtland picking up the only three first downs. This is the first scoreless first quarter of the 2022 finals.

  • More state titles (13) than all-time OHSAA playoff game losses (12)

  • All-time OHSAA playoff record of 96-12

  • Current winning streak is at 32 straight games, after two straight 16-0 seasons

  • Owns 6 undefeated OHSAA state playoff championship seasons, tying St. Ignatius and Moeller for the most

  • Their 13th OHSAA state title gave their league, the vaunted Midwest Athletic Conference, 40 state championships all-time. New Bremen's win later Saturday gave the MAC 41 titles.

2022 Ohio high school football teams seeking undefeated seasons

Six teams arrive in Canton looking to finish off an unbeaten season by becoming a state champion. All six are featured in three games.

Friday, it's a pair of 15-0 teams, Ironton and South Range, playing Division V.

Saturday, two more 15-0 teams, Kirtland and Marion Local, meet in Division VI. Also Saturday, 15-0 Cincinnati Wyoming plays 14-0 Cleveland Glenville in the final game of the weekend.

Last year, Chardon and Marion Local became the first Ohio high school football teams to finish a season 16-0.

This year, Marion Local achieved the feat again and South Range joined the Flyers at 16-0. Glenville finished the season 15-0 with its title.
