ODU will open 2024 football season with a game at South Carolina, home games vs. ECU, Virginia Tech

Old Dominion will open the 2024 football season with its first game in a decade against a Southeastern Conference opponent when the Monarchs visit South Carolina.

ODU released its finalized football schedule Friday.

The Monarchs play at South Carolina on Aug. 31 in the program’s first game against an SEC foe since a loss to Vanderbilt in 2014.

ODU follows that with two home games: Sept. 7 vs. East Carolina and Sept. 14 against Virginia Tech.

ECU has won all four of its games against ODU, including the last meeting in 2022 in Greenville, North Carolina. Virginia Tech is 3-2 against the Monarchs, with ODU winning both games in Norfolk: 49-35 against then-No. 13 Virginia Tech in 2018 and 20-17 in 2022.

The Monarchs finish their non-conference slate with a Sept. 28 game at MAC opponent Bowling Green.

Ten of ODU’s 12 opponents played in bowl games last season, including all eight of the Monarchs’ Sun Belt Conference foes.

ODU hosts rival James Madison on Nov. 16.

The schedule includes a couple of firsts for ODU’s program:

  • The first Thursday night game in school history — Oct. 24 at home against Georgia Southern.

  • The first three-game road trip from Sept. 28 through Oct. 12.

  • The first game against Sun Belt Conference opponent Texas State, at home on Oct. 19.

Old Dominion went 6-7 last season, falling 38-35 in overtime to Western Kentucky in the Famous Toastery Bowl in Charlotte.
