New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. said he wants to become the highest paid player in the National Football League.

His skills are unquestionable. In Sunday’s 27-24 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Beckham became the fastest player in NFL history to reach the 300-reception mark, needing only 43 games.

In his second game of the 2017 regular season, Beckham had nine receptions for 79 yards and two touchdowns. He also made headlines for all the wrong reasons when he dropped to his hands and knees, pretended to walk like a dog, and lifted up his leg to simulate a dig urinating.

Beckham received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, forcing the Giants to kick from the 20-yard line on the ensuing kickoff.

This is only the latest in a string of questionable conduct by the Giants’ best offensive weapon.

Who can forget Beckham’s beef with Josh Norman? When Norman was with the Carolina Panthers, Beckham launched himself like a missile at Norman’s head and was suspended for the following game. The beef continued when Norman signed with the Washington Redskins.

Beckham wasn’t pleased with the way last season’s Week 3 was going against Norman and the Redskins and took his frustrations out on a kicking net. Beckham slammed his helmet into the kicking net until it snapped back and hit him in the face.

Beckham also got into with the Minnesota Vikings’ Xavier Rhodes. Rhodes pretty much shut Beckham down in the game. He was penalized for taunting. On one play, Rhodes knocked him out of bounds. Beckham felt it was excessive and bumped an official. He was hit with a penalty as well as fined.

In last season’s Week 16 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, a Giants loss, Beckham became so angry he banged his head against the wall at Lincoln Financial Field. He had to be escorted into the locker room by Giants security after the incident was witnessed by Giants staff and the media.

Then there’s the infamous boat trip to Miami before last season’s Wild Card Game. After the Green Bay Packers ended the Giants’ season, Beckham punched a hole in the wall at Lambeau Field.

Beckham receives much criticism and some of it is simply because he’s young, talented, and has a lot of money. The incidents mentioned here are all his fault. This is Beckham’s fourth season in the NFL. Excuses cannot be made for his behavior anymore. He’s not some wide-eyed rookie who doesn’t know better.

Beckham is the best player on an NFL team in the nation’s largest media market. He should know better by now but he simply doesn’t get it. He said he did his dog impersonation to fire up his team. The Giants were already fired up because he scored a touchdown. The Giants were fired up because the offense finally came to life and he ruined it with a moment that took away from his performance…again.

Beckham said he wants to be the NFL’s highest paid player. There is no way that’s going to happen because he’s not a quarterback but he will cost himself money if he doesn’t realize he’s getting attention for all the wrong reasons.

Those who lack self-awareness are just self-centered. Beckham, in spite of his talent, has proven time and time again he’s extremely self-centered. This is not the way to conduct oneself playing the ultimate team sport.
