Odell Beckham Jr. explains why he doesn't like water

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Holding a half-empty bottle of Aquafina in his right hand, Odell Beckham Jr. disclosed his dirty little secret to the world.

“I really don’t like water,” he said with a smile, explaining his constant dehydration issues while holding court at his locker Friday.

Wait … what?

“I’m trying,” the NFL star continued. “I really just don’t like it. You know when you get that stomach feeling and it’s all slushy … ?”

Beckham made headlines when cameras spotted him leaving the field just before halftime of the New York Giants’ recent Thursday night loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. At the time, New York trailed 24-6. After the game, however, coach Pat Shurmur told reporters that Beckham’s unexpected exit was due to dehydration issues — and not frustrations over the team’s poor play, as many suspected.

“Dehydrated again,” Shurmur said postgame. “Some guys’ bodies dehydrate quicker than others, so we just have to keep looking for ways to make sure he stays hydrated.”

On Friday, Beckham noted that he’s “always cramped” but said, “I feel like I’m working harder than I ever have.”

“I’m trying to stay hydrated, but sometimes I’ve just gotta get an IV. It’s just necessary,” added the receiver, who also left the Giants’ Week 4 loss to New Orleans in order to get an IV. “You’re cramping in both calves, it’s hard to run and make cuts. And if you’re cramping and dehydrated you’re susceptible to something else. So, I’m trying to stay on top of it the best I can.”

The polarizing playmaker also made waves recently for his comments in an ESPN interview, in which he subtly took shots at his beleaguered quarterback Eli Manning and voiced frustration over Shurmur’s offensive play-calling. At the NFL owners meetings this week in New York, Giants owner John Mara directed his own salvo at Beckham, saying: “He needs to do a little more playing and a little less talking.”

Beckham said he hasn’t yet spoken to Mara about his remarks, but plans to.

“I respect and value his opinion, obviously, so that’s what we’re doing to do: Focus on Atlanta right now,” Beckham said. “I’m ready to talk about the Atlanta Falcons and that’s really it.

“ … We’re 1-5 and we need to start winning games. Everybody needs to pick it up. I need to play better. I can’t say that I’ve had my best games. I can’t say that I’ve done enough to help this team win. And I need to do more. Everybody needs to do more. Everybody’s got to pick it up. We win games together, we lose them together.”

So, for now, Beckham is done taking shots at his quarterback.

But he’s sure to have ticked off H20 lovers with his latest comments.
