Rivera reveals Joe Burrow could have been Washington's draft pick originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

Joe Burrow ranked as one of the top college quarterback prospects to ever enter the NFL Draft, and that fact was not lost upon Washington Football head coach Ron Rivera. In fact, had the Bengals not taken Burrow with the first pick in the 2020 draft, Rivera said Washington would have selected the LSU national champion.

"We think Joe is the full package. We really do. We think Chase [Young] is the full package. Depending on what Cincinnati did, that's what we were going to do, the opposite," Rivera said this week to Cincinnati reporters.

There are a few takeaways here. The first?

Duh.

Burrow had such a monster season last year at LSU that just about any football team on the planet would have taken him. Maybe not the Chiefs, but any other NFL team would have considered it. Seriously.

So of course Washington would have taken Burrow if he was there when they selected with the second overall pick. It's no slight to Chase Young, the pass rusher Rivera selected No. 2 overall and who is having a strong rookie season.

Young looks like a great player, but no matter how good, he's not a Heisman Trophy winning quarterback that completed 76 percent of his passes with 60 touchdowns in 2019. Nobody else is or was.

For Dwayne Haskins, this could be perceived as a slight. Maybe.

At the time of the NFL Draft, Haskins was considered to be the Washington starting QB. Prior to the Combine, Rivera talked about scouting Burrow and Tua Tagovailoa, but everyone on earth knew Burrow would go No. 1 to the Bengals and most of the Tua talk seemed like a smokescreen.

Washington was always taking Young too. They loved him then and love him now.

Haskins might be on the way out, and a new rookie QB could be on the way in next year, but none of that changes that Rivera's comments are fairly obvious.

Everyone wanted Burrow, including Washington, but the Bengals got him.
