1 killed after tornado touches down in Gaylord during thunderstorm

Dozens were injured and one person was killed during a tornado that touched down in Gaylord during a thunderstorm Friday afternoon.

The tornado touched down at 3:45 p.m. It traveled several miles over the course of several minutes, Jim Keysor, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service, told the Detroit Free Press.

According to NWS, a confirmed tornado was located at 3:54 p.m. near Gaylord, moving east at 55 miles per hour.

"It just touched down at around 3:45 and just went right through town," Sean Christensen, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service, told the Detroit Free Press.

Hazards reported include ping-pong ball size hail, around 1.5 inches.

Residents were urged to take cover and move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.

For residents who need help, MSP said a shelter is being established at E-Free Church in Gaylord located at 1649 E. M-32, and the Red Cross will be there as well.

NWS is observing the area and reviewing the damage.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said her "heart goes out" to the families and small businesses impacted.
