NSU strikes first but downed by Jets in 8-1 loss

Apr. 12—Despite striking first, Northeastern State couldn't overcome Newman University in their first of two games.

The Jets flew to an 8-1 win after a strong second inning on Thursday, April 12, in Topeka, Kansas.

NSU started the scoring when Allison Zanca struck a solo home run to give NSU a 1-0 lead. Overall, that was 1-of-4 hits for the RiverHawks.

After NSU took a quick lead, the Jets struck. NU's Lauren Kwan drove in a pair of runs to start the scoring to go up 2-1 with a big trip to right field. Kwak didn't stay on third base for too long; the next batter, Anissa Ramos, brought in Kwak with a double.

Rylee Gresham continued the scoring with a single to centerfield, driving in Ramos to put the Jets up 4-1.

With two runners on, NU finished their scoring barrage with a two-run homer from Hayley Bonython. The Jets picked up another run in the fourth inning to take the 8-1 win.

Overall, four RiverHawks finished the game with one hit, with Zanca's home run leading the way. On the pitching side, Madison Heinle picked up the loss, allowing eight runs, 12 hits, two strikeouts and three walks.

On NU's side, Jackie Gold led the way, allowing just four hits, one run, one walk and eight strikeouts. Bonython led the way for the RiverHawks with a 2-for-3 day with three RBIs. Kwak added two RBIs for NU.

NSU opens play in doubleheader action at noon on Saturday, April 13, at Missouri Southern.
