Nottingham Forest FC 1 - 2 Arsenal FC

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

21:34

Arsenal hold on to get a 2-1 win over Forest and close the gap to league leaders Liverpool. The Gunners dominated the first half but struggled in the final third to break down a compact Forest defence, though Jesus forced Turner into a good save right on the stroke of half-time. Things opened up after the break, and Jesus rifled a shot against the post before finally breaking the deadlock with a clever finish from a very tight angle. Shortly after, Arsenal got their second following a quick counter, with Saka drilling his low shot across goal into the bottom corner. In the 89th minute, Awoniyi gave the hosts some hope, poking it past Raya to half the deficit, but they couldn't find a second to get something from the game. It's three points that lift Arsenal into second place, now just two points behind Liverpool, who don't play until tomorrow, and it's the Reds that they face at the weekend. As for Forest, they stay in 16th, but the gap to the relegation zone is significantly smaller now due to results elsewhere. They travel to Bournemouth on Sunday. That's all for today, goodbye!

FULL-TIME: NOTTINGHAM FOREST 1-2 ARSENAL.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

21:26

Forest have one last chance to get the ball into the box, and Toffolo goes for a long throw-in. It's headed straight back to him by Rice, but his follow-up cross skims the top of Elanga's head.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

21:25

Murillo jumps to clear a long ball over the top, but as he does, Nketiah crashes head-first into his hip. The defender can't believe that a free-kick has gone against him, but it's a great chance for Arsenal to run the clock down.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

21:23

BLOCK! Raya's punched clearance isn't overly convincing, and it loops to Gibbs-White, who puts his laces through the half-volley. Kiwior is at full stretch to block it and it loops up for Awoniyi, but his effort is straight at the goalkeeper.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

21:21

Into the first of five added minutes here, and the Forest fans now believe they can snatch something late on. They're urging their team upfield and another loud cheer goes up as Elanga wins a corner.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

It's a risky backpass from Danilo to Turner, and he doesn't get enough on it. Saka gambles by chasing it down, but he catches Toffolo as the defender tries to hook it away.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

21:15

Forest are still trying to play out from the back, but they can't find a way through Arsenal. Awoniyi plays a blind pass out to the right, not realising that none of his team-mates are there, and the Gunners are quickly back in possession.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

21:13

Nketiah is slightly off balance, but he still manages to volley a cross into the box, looking for Trossard on the penalty spot. Omabamidele is alert to send it out for another Arsenal corner, which comes to nothing.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

21:11

WIDE! Arsenal break quickly on the counter once more, and Odegaard slides it into Trossard's path on the edge of the box. He puts his lace through the shot, but it swerves away from goal and wide of the post.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

21:10

Jesus has now scored against 29 of the 31 sides he has played against in the Premier League (94 per cent), failing to do so only against Cardiff City (one app) and Manchester City (two apps).

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

21:08

And Jesus goes off to a warm reception from the away fans as he's taken off for Nketiah.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

21:08

Arsenal are making a double change as well. Martinelli goes off for Trossard.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

21:06

That second Arsenal goal just seems to have knocked Forest's confidence slightly, and they're not putting as much pressure on Arsenal. The visitors aren't in a hurry to push forward, content to hold onto the ball in their own half.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

21:06

Jesus has switched out to the right now, and he whips a pacy cross into Havertz on the far side. He can't get it under control for a shot but manages to poke it through to Saka. Murillo desperately swings out a leg to clear it just in time.

Saliba cuts out Williams' cross, and the Gunners mount another dangerous counter. Saka has acres of space down the right and cuts inside to curl a shot on goal. It's blocked by Mangala, and Arsenal win their eighth corner of the game.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:59

Nuno gives a shake of his head on the touchline as Forest get the game back under way. Williams pushes forward down the right, but can't get away from Zinchenko to pick out a cross.

Forest are making another change here, and it's another adjustment to their frontline. Dominguez goes off, with Hudson-Odoi brought on in his place.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:52

Omabamidele darts in front of Smith Rowe to cut out Martinelli's cross, only to gift it straight back to the winger. He tries to pick out Jesus with his second attempt, but Danilo intercepts that one.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:51

Danilo spins away from two Arsenal defenders with clever turns, hooking the ball over his shoulder each time. There are half-hearted shouts from the stands for a penalty after he goes down under pressure from Gabriel in the box, but nothing's given.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:48

Forest have only won one of their last six Premier League games when drawing 0-0 at half-time (D3 L2), although that win did come in their most recent such match (2-1 v Manchester United in December).

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:47

OFF THE POST! It's great play from Arsenal, as Saka rolls it back to Odegaard, who dummies a shot before laying it off to Jessu on the right of the box. He's one-on-one with Turner and rifles a powerful shot past him, but it ricochets off the near post.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:45

Jesus has his hands up at the far post, asking for Martinelli to pick him out as he's completely unmarked. His fellow Brazilian tries to do just that, but Murillo thumps it away for a corner in front of Turner, who had it covered.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:43

GREAT SAVE! The game has opened up in the last couple of minutes, and Arsenal surge forward on the counter. It's not the cleanest strike by Saka as it bobbles in front of him and takes a slight nick off Montiel, but Turner still needs to get a strong arm behind it.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:42

SAVE! Awoniyi is wrestled down by Saliba to win a free-kick, and Gibbs-White curls a good delivery into the box. Williams rises highest to nod it towards goal, but it's straight down the middle at Raya.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:41

Gibbs-White tries to pick out Awoniyi with an early pass, but Gabriel blocks it, only to gift possession back to the midfielder. He switches it out to Williams on the right instead, but Saliba gets in the way of that cross. That's much better by Forest!

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:40

Zinchenko chips it forward for Martinelli, and it looks like the chance is gone when he trips, but he does well to still get a cross away. He can't pick out a team-mate either though, and Forest clear their lines once more.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:38

Arsenal have picked up where they left off in the first half, with Saka linking up well with Jesus down the right. The Brazilian fizzes a low cross towards Smith Rowe, but Murillo hooks it away.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:29

As soon as the half-time whistle blew, Arteta set off on a jog down the tunnel, clearly eager to get his team inside. Everything has worked for them until they got it into the final third, and they need to come up with a plan on how to open up their opponents. Forest have defended as a unit, which Nuno will have been pleased to see. They'll likely keep biding their time, looking for the golden chance that could snatch something from this game.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:25

Despite Arsenal's dominance over Forest in the first half, it's goalless at the break. The Gunners had 81 per cent possession but struggled to break down a compact Forest side in front of them. Their best chance came on the stroke of half-time as Jesus' header had to be scrambled over by Turner, with Smith Rowe also sending an attempt over on the half-hour mark. Forest barely got out of their own half, but Danilo had a good chance, only to send it over the bar when one-on-one with Raya.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:21

HALF-TIME: NOTTINGHAM FOREST 0-0 ARSENAL.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:20

GOOD SAVE! In the final action of the first half, Saka checks back to lose Montiel before curling a deep cross into the far post. Jesus gets above Omabamidele to head it towards the top corner, but Turner stretches to tip it over.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:17

Into the first of three added minutes, and Arsenal are trying to get a goal just before the break. They're still finding a lot of space down their left, with Zinchenko clipping it in this time, but Jesus' header loops high over the bar.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:15

SO CLOSE! Zinchenko's sliced cross isn't dealt with by Forest, and Smith Rowe keeps the move alive for Arsenal. His touch is heavy, but it ends up being a good pass to Saka, whose first-time shot trickles just wide of the near post after taking a deflection.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:13

CHANCE! Danilo wins it back in midfield and the space just opens up in front of him to drive into. He takes it to the edge of the D before taking aim, but his shot sails just over Raya's crossbar.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:11

Yellow Card Gabriel Fernando de Jesus

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:11

Again, Arsenal overwork it in the final third, and another chance goes begging. It's more good work by Jesus down the left as he fizzes it into the box, but Odegaard chooses to leave it. Rice isn't close enough to him, and Danilo pokes it away.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:09

Now that the danger has gone for Forest, Montiel goes down once more. He was caught on his shoulder by Omabamidele's studs and needs treatment. He's okay to carry on.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:06

BLOCK! There's a collision between Omabamidele and Montiel that sees the latter stay down in the box, but the referee doesn't stop play as it isn't a head injury. Martinelli carries on, curling a shot on goal, but it's blocked by Murillo.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:05

The Forest fans aren't happy with the referee at the moment, as they feel they should've had a free-kick. Dominguez looks to play a one-two with Williams, but he's blocked off from getting to the return pass. The referee waves him back to his feet.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:03

Forest have barely managed a touch of the ball in the last five minutes as Arsenal continue to up the pressure. Jesus is in the middle of every attack as he lifts it over the top towards Martinelli, but Omabamidele stretches to nod it out of his path.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:03

CHANCE! It's better from Arsenal here as Jesus slips away from Williams to burst along the edge of the box before touching it into Smith Rowe's feet. He spins to get a shot away, but he scoops it just wide of the near post.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

20:00

Saka gets a yard on Toffolo and lays it off to Odegaard, who touches it straight to Jesus. Instead of turning to have a shot, he tries to return it to the Arsenal captain, but it's one pass too many, and Forest clear their lines.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

19:59

Martinelli is getting a lot of joy down the left, and after Rice stops Gibbs-White's cross, he sets the Brazilian on his way. He fizzes a low cross into the box this time, but Murillo slides in to stop it from reaching Saka.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

19:59

Williams is penalised for a handball in midfield and Arsenal win a free-kick. After some debate, it's Odegaard that whips it into the box, but Turner rushes off his line to collect it.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

19:56

Jesus drops deep in his own half to cut out a Forest attack before setting Martinelli on the break. He drives down the left and sees a cross blocked by Williams, who goes to ground. He's holding his wrist, but he gets back up without needing treatment.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

19:53

Arsenal have had 71 per cent possession so far in this game, and they don't look like letting up the pressure any time soon. Martinelli drops a shoulder to lose Montiel down the right, but there are no Arsenal players in the box to get on the end of his cross.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

19:51

Raya goes long with a free-kick, and White gets in front of Toffolo down the right. A heavy touch at the wrong moment gets away from him though, and he runs it out of play before he can put a cross in.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

19:49

Forest's first push into the final third is quickly smothered, and Arsenal break quickly on the counter. Zinchenko tries to slide in Jesus on the left of the box, but the offside flag is up once more.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

19:48

The offside flag goes up to end an Arsenal attack, and now there's a break in play, Turner goes down holding his right hand. He needs treatment, but he's quickly back on his feet to continue.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

19:45

BLOCK! Odegaard sees a low shot blocked from the right, and Arsenal quickly switch it out to the opposite flank, with Martinelli sliding it through for Smith Rowe. He squares it into the middle for Jesus, but his first-time shot deflects over off Omobamidele.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

19:44

Forest are struggling to get a foothold in the game so far, with Arsenal quickly winning it back whenever possession is turned over. The hosts are defending in numbers though, making things difficult for the Gunners.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

19:42

Saka darts in behind down the right, but there's barely any space in the Forest penalty area. He tries to pull it back to the byline, but there are three red shirts between him and his closest team-mate.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

19:40

Arsenal have won five of their last six Premier League games against Forest (L1), and are looking to do the double over them in the competition for just the second time (also in 1998-99).

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

19:38

Forest are starting to press higher upfield now, and they're forcing Arsenal deeper into their own half. Gabriel just squeezes his pass past a stretching Williams, but Martinelli doesn't get too far with Dominguez tight to him.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

19:35

Jesus has started the game out on the left for the Gunners and he floats a cross into the box. It's just too high for Smith Rowe to get his head on, and Turner plucks it out of the air.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

19:33

Forest crowd bodies down their left side, forcing Arsenal to switch it out to the opposite flank. Jesus plays a one-two with Martinelli to try and open up space on the edge of the box, but he can't get a sight of goal.

Gabriel and Rice are also fit to start after passing late fitness checks following respective ankle and thigh problems. Havertz and Trossard start on the bench.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

19:23

Nuno makes three changes from the side that drew with Bristol on Friday, as Toffolo, Gibbs-White and Williams are all brought in. Mangala retains his place, despite reports linking him with a possible move to Lyon today. Yates and Hudson-Odoi drop to the bench, where they are boosted by the returns of Felipe, Elanga and Awoniyi from injury. Nuno Tavares is ineligible to face his parent club.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

19:07

It was a 1-0 defeat in this exact fixture last season that ended Arsenal's title hopes, and the Gunners will be looking to avoid a similar scoreline here as they look to close the gap to Liverpool at the top of the table. They had a slight wobble before their mid-season break, winning just one of their seven games in all competitions (D3 L3), but came back revitalised with a thumping 5-0 win over Crystal Palace last time out. However, they're winless in their last three Premier League away games (D1 L2) and haven't won any of their last three trips to The City Ground in all competitions.

Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

19:07

Forest were on a run of seven without a win (D1 L6) before Nuno Espirito Santo took over, with the Portuguese since overseeing just one loss in his six games at the helm (W3 D2), though that did come in their last Premier League outing when they were beaten 3-2 by Brentford. After seeing a flurry of goals in the first five games under Nuno, Forest played out a 0-0 draw away at Bristol City in their last match in the FA Cup, forcing them to another replay.
