Notre Dame hires Penn State's Micah Shrewsberry as next men's basketball coach

Micah Shrewsberry is the new men's basketball coach at Notre Dame after two seasons at Penn State.

Notre Dame made the announcement Friday, two days after reports of the move first surfaced.

“We are so excited to have Coach (Shrewsberry) join the Notre Dame family,” Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said in a statement

“During our two month process, we weekly reviewed our candidate pool and each week he (Micah) stayed at the top of our list due to his fit at the University and his commitment to the student-athlete experience. Not only do his personal & family values align with the University, but his dedication to the development of each member of his program as well.”

Shrewsberry, 46, led Penn State to a 23-14 record this season, the fourth most wins in school history. The Nittany Liones earned their first NCAA Tournament win since 2001 by beating No. 7 seed Texas A&M in the first round. The lost in the second round to Texas.

“I’m very excited to be joining the University of Notre Dame family,” Shrewsberry said. “The combination of top notch academics, plus a long storied history of success on the basketball court, made this a very attractive job for me. I can’t wait to get to campus and begin connecting with the students, faculty and staff which make this place special.”

The move is a return to Indiana for Shrewsberry.

He attended Cathedral High School in Indianapolis and played collegiate basketball in state at Hanover College. He served as the head coach of Indiana University South Bend from 2005 to 2007.

Shrewsberry was an assistant coach under Brad Stevens at Butler from 2007 to 2011 and an assistant at Purdue under Matt Painter from 2011 to 2013. He rejoined Stevens on the Boston Celtics staff for six seasons until 2019 before returning to Purdue as an assistant for two seasons. He’s coached on teams that have played in six NCAA Tournaments, two Final Fours and five NBA playoffs, including two Eastern Conference finals.

He got his second head coaching opportunity at Penn State, where he went 37-31 in two seasons.

Shrewsberry will succeed coach Mike Brey, who announced in January that he would step down at the conclusion of the 2022-23 season after 23 years. At the time, Brey said it was "time for a new voice to lead this group into the future."
