Notre Dame football: Sam Hartman’s career vs. NC State
No. 13 Notre Dame has steamrolled its way to 2-0 with dominating wins over both Navy and Tennessee State. The Irish combined to outscore those two 98-6, and Sam Hartman has been a big reason for the offensive success.
The tests for Hartman and Notre Dame are about to scale up in difficulty. This week the Fighting Irish travel to NC State, a program that has been steadily solid for years.
It’s also a team that has given Hartman a fair share of fits. The Notre Dame signal caller made three starts against them while at Wake Forest, something we take a look at below.
Sept. 19, 2020: NC State 45, Wake Forest 42
Hartman stats: 23-36 passing (63.9%), 236 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT
Hartman and Wake Forest had the ball with 2:25 left but sacks on consecutive plays did the Demon Deacons in. Hartman’s fourth-down pass attempt to Taylor Morin was broken up. The Wolfpack ran out the clock to seal the win in the 2020 opener for both teams.
Nov. 13, 2021: Wake Forest 45, NC State 42
Hartman stats: 20-47 passing (42.6%), 290 yards, 3 TDs, 3 INTs
“It wasn’t a pretty game by any means,” Hartman said. “A lot of mistakes on my end. Not very happy about that. but we pulled it out and that’s football in November.”
Nov. 5, 2022: NC State 30, Wake Forest 21
Hartman stats: 29-48 passing (60.4%), 397 yards, 2TDs, 3 INTs
Wake Forest’s issues running the ball (17 yards on 25 attempts) certainly didn’t help Hartman’s cause, but three interceptions is three interceptions anyway you shape it.
Hartman Totals vs. NC State:
Combined 1-2 as a starter
72 of 131 passing (54.9%), 923 yards (307 per game), 6 TDs (2/game), 6 INTs (2/game)
