Notable quotes from QB Bo Nix after Oregon’s spring game
Leading up to this year’s spring game, the expectation was that after the first half, Bo Nix’s day would be done. But as the game went deeper into the fourth quarter, Nix was still at the helm for this year’s green team, scoring the game-sealing touchdown with just a minute left in the game.
After all four quarters finished, Nix had completed 19 of 40 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown.
When meeting with media members after the game, Nix spoke about the opportunity to talk to and learn from Oregon legend Marcus Mariota, who was an honorary coach, and what it was like to see his adopted brother Tez Johnson have such a breakout.
Here are some of the most notable quotes from Nix after the game.
Playing with his brother, Tez Johnson
Question: What has it been like to watch Tez Johnson grow and develop this spring?
Nix: “It’s been really awesome. You know, he just provides a unique spark on offense. We don’t really have a guy like that who’s just kind of a little scat guy. He does a good job when he gets the ball. A lot of those receivers, they do really good in competitive environments. And that’s what you saw today. You know, each and every one of them kind of made a play or two of their own, but, yeah, I thought Tez made a really good play today.”
Question: Was the way things played out down the stretch last season part of why you wanted to return to Eugene for another year in 2023?
Nix: “I just felt like last year, we could’ve finished at times better and we know that’s something going in this year that we need to do. We were in a great spot last year and then didn’t finish. So this year our goal is to go be the best that we can be. One of my personal goals is to win a championship. It’s something that last year we weren’t able to do and that does bother me because I feel like we were in a position to do that last year.”
“I don’t care about personal accolades. I don’t care about stats. If it’s seven to six and you win a championship, I’ll be the happiest guy in the locker room.”
How it felt to connect with Troy Franklin for a touchdown
Question: You once again connected with Troy Franklin for a TD today, what was it like to get that feeling back?
Nix: “It was it was great. Hitting deep balls is always really good. A lot of times the difference in football games is which quarterback can hit those deep balls. I thought Ty and I both hit some deep balls today, which was good and that’s what we’ve been doing in practice. But you know, Troy had a great release, put it up for a guy like that, and he’ll go get it.”
Question: What do you make of Ty Thompson’s performance today after starting so slowly but being able to turn it around and put up some nice numbers?
Nix: “I thought he played really good. He stood in the pocket and made some really good throws. Ty’s just a very consistent guy. He’s not gonna get too high or too low. He’s gonna go to the next play, and he’s gonna make the next play. He does a really good job in our offense of executing and I thought he showed that today. He made some incredible throws. He made some deep throws, touch throws, some firm throws. I think he showed it all today. So being able to share a room with a guy like that is awesome.”
Why play he played all four quarters
Question: Was it always part of the plan to play into the fourth quarter, or did you competitiveness get the best of you once green team went down?
Nix: “That was just part of the plan, to go back and forth. For sure when we got down I definitely wanted to go back in.”
On playing with a new O-line
Question: You’ve got an entirely new offensive line, how did you feel playing behind them today?
Nix: “I think they do a really good job. There are new faces, but still very talented players. You get them going together and they start communicating more and more with more experience and as we go they’re only gonna get better. And you know, with that group, the name of the game is just staying healthy and so doing what’s right throughout the season with their bodies.”
His relationship with Marcus Mariota
Question: What was it like to talk to and hang around with Marcus Mariota?
Nix: “I’ve been able to hang around him more and more as he’s been around. Very professional, awesome guy. You can just tell in his spirit and how he carries himself. He’s a great guy. He’s already been through what I have. Been there, done that. He’s definitely a guy that you look up to, and want in your circles. You want to be able to talk to him and reach out to him and he provides. He doesn’t big-time anybody, he’s there for us, and I appreciate that about him.”
How this year's roster compares to last year's
Question: How do you think this year’s roster compares to the one you had last year?
Nix: “It’s a lot different, a lot of new faces. Guys are gonna have to take the next step and fill a role that they may have sat behind or maybe transferred into. But we have very capable guys. Our coaches are gonna do a really good job putting those guys in situations to succeed.”
On if he helps coaches recruit players
Question: With the transfer portal, how do you help the coaches sell the program and what you’re building here?
Nix: “That’s a thing for the coaches. If they want to go out and get somebody and they want my help, I’ll provide it. But you know, that’s what they’re paid to do, that’s what we gotta give them credit for doing. They’ve got the final say, and I’m willing to do whatever they want me to do.”
Looking to the summer
Question: This summer will be quite a bit different from last year for you, how are you approaching things and attacking it?
Nix: “I’m excited to get into a new summer because as school dies down and things die down you got a few months to really get ready for fall camp. Fall camp is going to be important for us. Those practices are going to be really important to get in shape and to be comfortable with each and every one of the guys next to you.”
“Somewhere, I like to get with the guys for a little bit extra film study. That’s when you really mesh with the guys.”
“A lot of the world is on summer break and a lot of the world’s doing other things while we’re here working together. So it’s a good situation for us to get closer and build as a team built on what we have so that we can be ready for the season and go out there and execute at a high level.”
