A big shout out to my first cousin Paul Wernick who has a new movie coming out with his writing partner Rhett Reese, Zombieland: Double Tap. I hope everyone enjoys it!

It’s a busier week in the NHL with 10 teams playing four games and New Jersey playing only once. Take advantage of the schedule, especially in leagues that have weekly transactions.

ANAHEIM

Games this week

@ Nashville, @ Dallas, @ Colorado, @ Vegas

Tired: @ Vegas (Sunday)

Rested: @ Colorado (Saturday)

Notes

The Ducks play four games this week with three coming in four nights. Ryan Miller should get one start with John Gibson getting the crease the other three games. Gibson continues to excel as he has a 4-2 record to go with a 1.85 GAA and a .941 save percentage. Miller was sharp in his only start, giving up one goal on 27 shots. Jakob Silfverberg had a goal and two assists Wednesday to take over the team lead in points with six. He also is tied for the NHL lead with a plus-eight. The Ducks sent Isac Lundestrom to the minors Tuesday. The Ducks first round pick and 23rd overall in 2018, had no points in three games this season.

ARIZONA

Games this week

@ New York Rangers, @ New York Islanders, @ New Jersey

Tired: @ New Jersey (Friday)

Rested: None

Notes

The Coyotes play all three games in the New York area and do it in four nights. Expect to see Darcy Kuemper play twice with Antti Raanta playing once in goal. Kuemper is continuing his outstanding play from last year as he is 3-2 with a 1.62 GAA and a .949 save percentage. Phil Kessel finally scored Thursday and not only did he score on the power play, he did it twice! That’s exactly what the Coyotes were looking for when they picked him up from Pittsburgh in exchange for Alex Galchenyuk. Arizona upended Nashville 5-2 and are 3-2-1 this season. Jordan Oesterle is out after absorbing a shot to the back of his head. Nick Schmaltz leads the Coyotes with seven points in six games as Arizona has 16 goals in their first six games. They have struggled to score in the last two seasons so this is a nice start for them.

BOSTON

Games this week

vs. Toronto, vs. St. Louis, @ New York Rangers

Tired: @ New York Rangers (Sunday)

Rested: vs. Toronto (Tuesday)

Notes

David Pastrnak continued his quest to be the player of the week as he has six goals and an assist in two games thus far to give him eight goals and five assists in just seven games. He was held pointless in his first two games before beginning this five-game scoring streak. David Krejci is out with an upper-body injury. Charlie Coyle has taken over his spot centering the second line between Jake DeBrusk and Brett Ritchie. Brad Marchand is on a six-game points streak with four goals and 11 points. He has only four penalty minutes this season after picking up 96 last year in 79 games. The Bruins have been splitting the net early on as Tuukka Rask is 3-0-1 with a 1.72 GAA and a .946 save percentage while Jaroslav Halak is 2-1-0 with a 1.69 GAA and a .951 save percentage.

BUFFALO

Games this week

vs. San Jose, @ New York Rangers, @ Detroit

Tired: @ Detroit (Friday)

Rested: None

Notes

The Sabres play three games in four nights. Carter Hutton is likely to play twice with Linus Ullmark getting the other start. Hutton has been great thus far as is 5-0 with back-to-back shutouts and lowering his GAA to a gaudy 1.39. The Sabres are atop the Atlantic Division standings at 6-1-1. Casey Mittelstadt was off to another slow start with only two points in his first seven games but the Sabres first-round pick and eighth overall in 2017 was in on everything Thursday with two goals and an assist in a shutout win over the Kings. Victor Olofsson has six goals and eight points with all six goals coming via the power play. Nineteen-year-old defenseman Rasmus Dahlin continues to show why he is a superstar in the making as he has a goal and nine points in eight games.

CALGARY

Games this week

vs. Washington, vs. Florida, @ Winnipeg

Tired: None

Rested: None

Notes

If anyone thought that Cam Talbot was going to claim the net this season in Calgary; they were wrong. David Rittich stated that he wanted to play 60 games this season and he is well on his way as he has started seven of the Flames first eight games. The Calgary netminder is 4-2-1 with a 2.55 GAA and a .919 save percentage. Matthew Tkachuk is showing no signs of missing all of training camp as he is tied for the team lead in points with Johnny Gaudreau at seven. Milan Lucic finally picked up his first point as a Calgary Flame, drawing an assist Thursday. Elias Lindholm leads the Flames with five goals but needed help off the ice in the second period after being slashed and did not return. Lindholm just earlier, elbowed the Red Wings Darren Helm (who was the one who slashed him) in the head and could get a suspension for his misdeed.

CAROLINA

Games this week

@ Columbus, vs. Chicago

Tired: None

Rested: None

Notes

Nino Niederreiter has yet to score in eight games for the Hurricanes. He does have three assists but look for him to break out soon as he is getting plenty of chances. Erik Haula on the other hand, has been hot with six goals and an assist. He is on a four-game scoring streak. Petr Mrazek is a perfect 4-0 this season with a 1.94 GAA to go with a .919 save percentage. He has been sharing the net with James Reimer who is 2-2 in his four starts with a 3.01 GAA and a .914 save percentage. It looks to be only a matter of time until Mrazek gets the majority of starts in the Carolina cage. Dougie Hamilton leads the Hurricanes in points with nine. The blueliner has five goals thus far.

CHICAGO

Games this week

vs. Vegas, vs. Philadelphia, @ Carolina, vs. Los Angeles

Tired: None

Rested: vs. Vegas (Tuesday)

Notes

The Blackhawks complete their seven-game homestand this week. They play four games including three in four nights so don’t be surprised if Corey Crawford and Robin Lehner split the net this week. Heading into action on Friday, the Blackhawks had played a league-low four games so things are going to get busy. Crawford has started in three of the four contests thus far, leaving Jennings winner from last season, Robin Lehner sitting on the bench for the more part. Alexander Nylander has two goals thus far after his off-season trade from Buffalo.  Patrick Kane leads Chicago with five points while Jonathan Toews finally picked up his first point of the season Monday.

COLORADO

Games this week

@ St. Louis, @ Vegas, vs. Anaheim

Tired: vs. Anaheim (Saturday)

Rested: None

Notes

The Avalanche complete a six-game road trip this week. The Avs finally lost this week as Pittsburgh beat them in overtime but Colorado is off to an amazing start at 5-0-1 thus far. Philipp Grubauer is 4-0-1 with a 2.57 GAA and a .922 save percentage and backup Pavel Francouz was great in his only start, giving up two goals on 36 shots in a win over Arizona in overtime. Rookie sensation Cale Makar has six assists in six games and the rookie has taken over quarterbacking the power play from the departed Tyson Barrie. The top line of Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen and Gabriel Landeskog have combined for nine goals and 25 points thus far.

COLUMBUS

Games this week

@ Toronto, vs. Carolina, @ Philadelphia

Tired: None

Rested: None

Notes

We wish Columbus coach John Tortorella a quick recovery as he underwent surgery to treat skin cancer on his face. The good news is that while he missed practice Tuesday he was back Wednesday. Liam Foudy, the Blue Jackets first round pick and 18th overall in 2018, was returned to London of the OHL after he was activated off the injured/non-roster list. He missed all of camp with an upper body injury which destroyed his chances of making the team but is someone to keep an eye on next season. Alexander Wennberg leads the Blue Jackets with four points in six games. The center has one goal after scoring only twice in 75 games last season.

DALLAS

Games this week

vs. Ottawa, vs. Anaheim, vs. Pittsburgh

Tired: None

Rested: None

Notes

Joe Pavelski got off the schneid Wednesday with his first goal as a member of the Dallas Stars. The forward was the Stars big free agent signing in the off-season but was off to a horrible start as he had only one assist in seven games before Wednesday’s goal. Ben Bishop was thought to be a top-three goaltender in the NHL after his great season last year when he had a 1.98 GAA and a .934 save percentage. He has slumped early on with a 1-4-1 record to go with a 2.84 GAA and a .899 save percentage for a faltering Dallas squad. Corey Perry made his first appearance as a Dallas Star Wednesday, seeing second line action with Roope Hintz and Mattias Janmark.  He started the season on the injured reserve list with a foot injury and was pointless against the Blue Jackets. Tyler Seguin has only four points in eight games, but that is still twice as much as Jamie Benn.

DETROIT

Games this week

vs. Vancouver, @ Ottawa, vs. Buffalo, vs. St. Louis

Tired: @ Ottawa (Wednesday)

Rested: vs. Buffalo (Friday), vs. St. Louis (Sunday)

Notes

The Red Wings play four games this week including three games in four nights. Look for Jimmy Howard and Jonathan Bernier to share the cage. Darren Helm had a big fantasy night Thursday with the Red Wings only goal as well as 15 minutes in penalties. Danny DeKeyser is off to a good start with four assists in six games but fellow defenseman Mike Green is not as he has yet to garner a point in seven contests. Anthony Mantha continues to lead the Red Wings with six goals and 10 points in seven games but he has gone three straight games without finding the back of the net. Andreas Athanasiou had 30 goals last season for Detroit but has only one assist in five games with the Red Wings this season.

EDMONTON

Games this week

@ Minnesota, vs. Washington, vs. Florida

Tired: None

Rested: None

Notes

The high-flying Oilers are getting great production offensively, led by their two superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl who have 17 and 15 points respectively in seven games to lead the NHL in scoring. Oscar Klefbom has given fantasy owners a big bonus as he has a goal and eight assists so far with four helpers on the power play. Their goaltending has also held up as Mike Smith is 3-1-0 with a 2.51 GAA and a .917 save percentage while Mikko Koskinen is perfect in three starts with a 2.60 GAA and a .927 save percentage after an outstanding 49-save effort in a 6-3 win over Philadelphia. James Neal picked up an assist in the contest, his first in seven games this season. He does have eight goals to lead the NHL with the Bruins David Pastrnak.

FLORIDA

Games this week

vs. Pittsburgh, @ Calgary, @ Edmonton

Tired: None

Rested: None

Notes

The Panthers are 2-2-2 in the early going but have not received the goaltending from Sergei Bobrovsky thus far as he is 2-2-1 with a 3.90 GAA and a .870 save percentage. He is usually a slow-starter and should heat up in November. Mike Hoffman leads the Panthers with five goals and eight points. Aleksander Barkov has yet to score but has five assists in six games. Keith Yandle is also off to a slow start with a goal and an assist. The only other Florida defenseman to find the back of the net is MacKenzie Weeger who has two goals and four points. Evgenii Dadonov has four goals and seven points but a minus-four rating.

LOS ANGELES

Games this week

@ Winnipeg. @ St. Louis, @ Minnesota, @ Chicago

Tired: None

Rested: None

Notes

Like all the California teams this week, the Kings are on the road for all four games including three in four nights. Expect to see the slumping Jonathan Quick and Jack Campbell share the net. Quick has not played in the last two after starting the season at 0-3 with a 6.43 GAA and a .793 save percentage. Campbell has given up four goals in the last two games but the Kings have failed to score in both so he is 2-2-0 with a 2.77 GAA and a .897 save percentage. No question on who deserves to be the number one goalie at this time. Despite the back-to-back shutout losses, Anze Kopitar is still averaging over a point-a-game with eight in seven contests. Ilya Kovalchuk has a couple of goals and six points but a minus-eight rating.

MINNESOTA

Games this week

vs. Edmonton, @ Nashville, vs. Los Angeles

Tired: None

Rested: None

Notes

The Wild finally picked up their first victory of the season, shutting out Ottawa. Looks like they play well in the afternoon (it was a 1 PM ET start) but are terrible at night at 0-6. Joel Eriksson Ek blocked three Shea Weber shots on Thursday and did not return. Three defensemen, Ryan Suter, Jared Spurgeon and Brad Hunt lead the Wild in points with four and doesn’t that say everything about this season. No Wild has more than two goals in seven games as the team has scored only 14 in seven contests while giving up 25. Devan Dubnyk is 0-5 with a 4.44 GAA and a .867 save percentage. When the Wild played well at the beginning of the 2018-19 season, it was Dubnyk standing on his head, he was so good. It’s not the case this season.

MONTREAL

Games this week

vs. San Jose, vs. Toronto

Tired: None

Rested: vs. Toronto (Saturday)

Notes

Victor Mete scored on Thursday and it was his first career goal in 127 games. Congratulations. Also, congratulations are in order to Nick Suzuki who scored the first of his career in the same game, although it was only his seventh career contest. He was the subject of some harsh words from coach Claude Julien a week ago but Julien just wanted to see the rookie compete harder. Carey Price picked up a 17 save shutout over lowly Minnesota. Jonathan Drouin, Max Domi and Brendan Gallagher lead the Habs with seven points apiece while Joel Armia leads with four goals. Paul Byron was on the fourth line but was moved up to play alongside Max Domi and Artturi Lehkonen.

NASHVILLE

Games this week

vs. Anaheim, vs. Minnesota, @ Tampa Bay

Tired: None

Rested: None

Notes

Looks like the Predators should just use Pekka Rinne as he is 4-0 this season with a 2.76 GAA and a .908 save percentage while Juuse Saros is 0-3 with a 4.74 GAA and a .853 save percentage. Ryan Ellis is off to a good start with a goal and nine points and he is tied for the team lead in points with Matt Duchene.  Filip Forsberg is day-to-day with a lower-body injury. He leads the Predators with five goals. Craig Smith has only one assist in seven games. Roman Josi leads the team with 13 penalty minutes, which includes nine minutes in his last two games against Vegas and Arizona on the road.

NEW JERSEY

Games this week

vs. Arizona

Tired: None

Rested: vs. Arizona (Friday)

Notes

First overall pick in 2019, Jack Hughes, picked up his first career point Thursday. The Devils picked up their first win of the season in the same game as they knocked off the Rangers 5-2. New Jersey is off to a poor start at 1-4-2 and have allowed 29 goals in the seven games. Free agent signee Wayne Simmonds has only one assist in seven games. Despite the poor start, Taylor Hall, the team’s leading scorer with five points, thinks the Devils are sticking together and enjoy playing together. P.K. Subban leads the blueline crew with three points and the team with 14 penalty minutes.

NEW YORK ISLANDERS

Games this week

vs. Arizona, @ Ottawa, vs. Philadelphia

Tired: @ Ottawa (Friday)

Rested: vs. Philadelphia (Sunday)

Notes

The Islanders play three games in four nights. The number one job is up in the air so look for Semyon Varlamov who has given up three goals on 70 shots in his last two games, to play twice with Thomas Greiss playing once. Mathew Barzal has three goals in seven games. He is a playmaker (he had 40 goals in 166 career games heading into the season) but has all three goals in his last two games. Casey Cizikas is day-to-day with a lower-body injury. Jordan Eberle is still out, as he also has a lower-body injury. Oliver Wahlstrom made his NHL debut this week. The 19-year-old was selected 11th overall in 2018 and has a lot of offensive upside as he is a gifted scorer. That may not happen this season but he is someone to keep an eye on.

NEW YORK RANGERS

Games this week

vs. Arizona, vs. Buffalo, vs. Boston

Tired: None

Rested: vs. Boston (Sunday)

Notes

The Rangers have lost two in a row after winning their first two contests. Mika Zibanejad has eight points but none in the two losses as the Rangers have scored only three times in the last two games. Both Henrik Lundqvist and Alaxandar Georgiev have split the net with both recording a win and a loss. Lundqvist has a 3.54 GAA and a .904 save percentage while Georgiev has a 2.56 GAA and a .928 save percentage. Defenseman Adam Fox is still looking for his first NHL point. Brett Howden centered the second line Thursday with Chris Kreider and Kaapo Kakko. Tony DeAngelo scored his first of the season Thursday.

OTTAWA

Games this week

@ Dallas, vs. Detroit, vs. New York Islanders, vs. San Jose

Tired: None

Rested: vs. Detroit (Wednesday), vs. New York Islanders (Friday)

Notes

The Senators play four times this week but do not play three games in four nights. Although the Senators lost in a shootout Thursday, goaltender Anders Nilsson was sensational, as he stopped 52 shots in a 3-2 loss in Vegas. Connor Brown has yet to score but has five assists in six games. Anthony Duclair has moved to the top line with Brady Tkachuk and Colin White. He has only one goal this season in six games. Mikkel Boedker was a healthy scratch Thursday and has only played twice this season. Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Vladislav Namestnikov and Tkachuk lead the Senators with two goals.

PHILADELPHIA

Games this week

vs. Vegas, @ Chicago, vs. Columbus, @ New York Islanders

Tired: @ New York Islanders (Sunday)

Rested: None

Notes

The Flyers play three games in four nights as part of their four-game week so look for Carter Hart to play three times with Brian Elliott getting one start. Hart was pulled from his last start in Edmonton as he gave up four goals on 14 shots. Despite the bad outing, Hart is 2-1-1 with a 2.46 GAA and a .904 save percentage. Travis Konecny leads the Flyers with three goals and seven points while Oskar Lindblom also has three goals. Claude Giroux has yet to score and has only three assists in five games. Shayne Gostisbehere is picking up where he left off last season as he has yet to put up a point in five games after a 37-point season in 2018-19. James van Riemsdyk has zero points this season as well.

PITTSBURGH

Games this week

@ Florida, @ Tampa Bay, @ Dallas

Tired: @ Tampa Bay (Wednesday)

Rested: None

Notes

The injuries continue to pile up for the Penguins as Jared McCann missed Wednesday’s game with a lower-body injury. The good news is that he partook in practice Thursday. Despite all the injuries (Evgeny Malkin, Alex Galchenyuk. Nick Bjugstad, Zach Trotman and Bryan Rust) the Penguins are off to a good start at 5-2-0. Sidney Crosby has been great with four goals and 12 points while Jake Guentzel leads the Penguins with five goals. Sam Lafferty was recalled from the minors due to the spate of injuries and had five points including three goals in five games. Brandon Tanev is seeing top line duty and has a goal and three assists.

ST. LOUIS

Games this week

vs. Colorado, vs. Los Angeles, @ Boston, @ Detroit

Tired: @ Detroit (Sunday)

Rested: None

Notes

The Blues play four games this week including three in four nights. Jordan Binnington will get three starts with Jake Allen getting one. Vladimir Tarasenko went goalless in his first five games but has a goal in each of his last two contests. Brayden Schenn leads with five goals and eight points. The fantasy value of Alexander Steen is negligible as the 35-year-old has only two assists in seven games. The drop off was noticeable last season when he has only 27 points in 65 games as he has been passed on the depth charts and is a bottom-six forward. Robert Thomas was back in the lineup Thursday after missing five games with an upper-body injury.

SAN JOSE

Games this week

@ Buffalo, @ Montreal, @ Toronto, @ Ottawa

Tired: @ Toronto (Friday)

Rested: None

Notes

The Sharks play all four games on the road including three in four nights. Martin Jones should get a trio of starts with Aaron Dell picking up one.  Jones gave up four goals in each of his first three starts (all losses) but has given up only three goals in his last two games, both wins. He is 2-3-0 with a 3.24 GAA and a .902 save percentage. After going pointless in his first two games, Logan Couture is on a five-game points streak and has seven points, tied for the team lead with Brent Burns. Evander Kane is only one point behind despite playing three less games due to a suspension. Kane had a first period hat trick Wednesday. Marc-Edouard Vlasic has not picked up a point in seven games.

TAMPA BAY

Games this week

vs. Pittsburgh, vs. Nashville

Tired: None

Rested: vs. Pittsburgh (Wednesday)

Notes

The Lightning are off to an okay start at 4-2-1 but after winning 62 games last season, their 2019-20 season is not ideal. Steven Stamkos leads the team in points with nine and is tied with defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk at four goals. Nikita Kucherov is just over a point-a-game with eight in seven contests, but that is a far cry off last season’s pace where he had 128 points in a full season. Defensemen Mikhail Sergachev and Victor Hedman have yet to score but both have six assists. Goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy is 4-1 with a 2.58 GAA and a .921 save percentage but backup Curtis McElhinney has been less than desirable with a 0-1-1 record to go with a 3.51 GAA and a .901 save percentage. The power play has five goals in seven games (tied for 12th) but led the NHL with 74 goals with the man-advantage last season.

TORONTO

Games this week

vs. Columbus, @ Boston, vs. San Jose, @ Montreal

Tired: @ Boston (Tuesday), @ Montreal (Saturday)

Rested: vs. San Jose (Friday)

Notes

The Maple Leafs play four games with a pair of back-to-back contests. That is not a good scenario as backup Michael Hutchinson has struggled this season. Look for Frederik Andersen to play three times with Hutchinson playing once. If Hutchinson fails again, the Maple Leafs could be looking elsewhere for a backup. John Tavares suffered a broken finger Wednesday and will be out of action for at least two weeks. Ilya Mikheyev has been a nice addition from the KHL as the Russian rookie has three goals and six points in eight games. The Maple Leafs have not looked good this season. Their 4-3-1 record has involved wins over Ottawa, Columbus, Detroit and Minnesota, not exactly the elite of the NHL. Auston Matthews sits third in NHL goal scoring with seven, one behind James Neal and David Pastrnak.

VANCOUVER

Games this week

@ Detroit, vs. Washington

Tired: None

Rested: Washington (Friday)

Notes

After a slow start to the season, Elias Pettersson is heating up and is on a four-game points streak. He is up to two goals and six assists. Thatcher Demko has taken over the number one spot in net for now as fellow netminder Jacob Markstrom is away from the team for personal reasons. Demko won his second of the season in two starts and has a 1.92 GAA and a .938 save percentage. Vancouver has been getting great goaltending as Markstrom was 2-2 with a 2.23 GAA and a .926 save percentage before leaving the team. He is expected back on October 19. Micheal Ferland scored his first goal in a Vancouver uniform Thursday. Bo Horvat has been slumping with only a goal and an assist in six games. J. T. Miller continues to lead the team in goals and points with four and eight respectively.

VEGAS

Games this week

@ Philadelphia, @ Chicago, vs. Colorado, vs. Anaheim

Tired: @ Chicago (Tuesday)

Rested: vs. Anaheim (Sunday)

Notes

It’s a busy week for Vegas with four games, two early in the week on the road and then back home for a pair. Look for Marc-Andre Fleury to see action in three contests with Oscar Dansk getting one start if Malcolm Subban has not recovered from his lower-body injury. Mark Stone leads the Golden Knights with 11 points while Reilly Smith is tops in goals with six. Valentin Zykov was suspended for 20 games for testing positive for a banned substance. Nate Schmidt is still a week or two away from returning from an upper-body injury that occurred in the season opener. William Karlsson has yet to score but does have seven assists in eight games.

WASHINGTON

Games this week

@ Calgary, @ Edmonton, @ Vancouver

Tired: @ Vancouver (Friday)

Rested: None

Notes

The Capitals are in Western Canada this week where they play three games in four nights. Braden Holtby should see action in a pair of games and Ilya Samsonov in one, even though Samsonov has outplayed the veteran Holtby this season. Samsonov is 3-1-0 with a 1.84 GAA and a .933 save percentage while Holtby is 1-1-2 with a 4.27 GAA and a .846 save percentage. Holtby has five starts in goal to Samsonov’s three. John Carlson is third in NHL scoring behind the Edmonton duo of McDavid and Draisaitl. He has 14 points in eight games. Alex Ovechkin has a team-leading five goals. Carl Hagelin has only one assist in eight games. Jonas Siegenthaler and not Tom Wilson leads the team with 12 penalty minutes. Wilson has only four minors this season in eight games.

WINNIPEG

Notes

Winnipeg completes a six game homestand this week. The Jets are off to a slow start at 4-5-0. Bryan Little (concussion) has been given the green light for contact in practice but is still not back in the lineup. Rookie defenseman Ville Heinola had an assist Thursday after sitting out the previous three games as a healthy scratch. Mark Letestu is out of action with an undisclosed injury. Mark Scheifele and Patrik Laine lead the Jets with 12 points apiece. Neal Pionk and Josh Morrissey are tops among defensemen with six points each. Morrissey has four power play assists to Pionk’s two. Still no word on the plans of Dustin Byfuglien who is deciding his future.
