North Carolina football players are chipping in for victims of Hurricane Florence.

Per both the Daily Tar Heel and Inside Carolina, members of the UNC football team donated their $15 a day per diems to help those affected by the hurricane. The efforts came after former North Carolina linebacker Kevin Reddick asked if the school could help residents of his hometown of New Bern recover from the hurricane. An equipment truck loaded with supplies will head to Lumberton.

From Inside Carolina:

The football team responded by donating their per diem money. Many of the coaches’ wives used the funds to go to Costco to buy waters, Gatorades and supplies. It will all be given to Reddick, who will then help get it to the people in need in New Bern.

The truck, which will continue to be loaded up this week, will head to Lumberton, N.C. “Hopefully we can get it down there, provide some supplies to them, bring it back, fill it up, and take it someplace else,” [North Carolina athletic director] Cunningham said.

North Carolina announced Monday that it would start collecting donations from the public on Tuesday to help those affected by the hurricane. Duke and Houston, which had a supply drive for Hurricane Harvey a year ago, are also collecting items. In addition to donating their per diems, players also helped load items into the equipment truck on Tuesday.

“Obviously we were very blessed to have not been hit as hard as a lot of the state,” tight end Brandon Fritts told the Daily Tar Heel. “We wanted just to do anything we could to help and give back to the rest of the state.”

Over 30 people have died as a result of Hurricane Florence and floodwaters continue to rise in some areas.
