Norfolk State men to host CollegeInsider Tournament semifinal on Saturday

Norfolk State will get a chance to end its season on a high note after losing in the MEAC Tournament semifinals to Howard on Friday.

The Spartans (22-11, 11-3 MEAC) are the No. 1 seed in the CollegeInsider Tournament (CIT), coach Robert Jones told The Pilot on Monday. As the top seed, Norfolk State received an opening-round bye and will play the winner of Wednesday’s matchup between Austin Peay and Alabama A&M. NSU will host [cq the game at Echols Hall at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Norfolk State’s opponent was initially “TBA” when the CIT announced its field of contenders late Sunday night.

The CIT is typically a 16-team tournament but will have just nine teams in 2024, the first time the tournament has been played since 2019. Texas Southern, Tarleton State, Abilene Christian, Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Purdue Fort Wayne and Bowling Green are the other teams participating.

Norfolk State is no stranger to the CIT, having played in the tournament four times during Jones’ tenure.

In any other year, Norfolk State would be preparing for the National Invitation Tournament rather than the CIT. But before the season, the NIT decided to change its automatic-bid qualifications, meaning regular-season champions like Norfolk State who did not make the NCAA Tournament would no longer earn an automatic bid as in previous years.
