The fan base will have to wait a bit before finding out who head coach Chris Ash will start at quarterback this weekend against Illinois. The week began with an open competition between senior Kyle Bolin, junior Gio Rescigno and freshman Johnathan Lewis.

“We will have a decision before we obviously kick off, but nothing to update or announce art this moment,” Ash said following today’s practice in Piscataway.

Almost a full week of practice has gone by and all continues to be rather quiet in regards to who that starter will be.

“We are still evaluating the whole week, the whole body of work throughout the week,” Ash said. “We are just not ready to [announce] it yet.”

Ash did say that Lewis could still have a role in the game if he does not wind up starting.

“Absolutely,” Ash said. “All of them could potentially. Three quarterbacks could be in the game. Injuries occur, something like that happened, or a special situation came up. But Johnathan is in the mix. But just like the other games, Johnathan will have a role of some sort.”

Bolin has started all five games and Rescigno has played the fewest of the three.

However, the junior has seen more reps in practice this week with the first-team offense than he has all season.

“Physical reps are different than mental reps,” Recigno said after Tuesday’s practice. “I am just getting back in the feel of things, getting more reps and seeing what the defense is doing.”
