OK, Now We Know What the ‘Spider-Man 3’ Title Really Is

• The stars of the upcoming third Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man installment revealed the movie's official title—but the movie's three stars revealed three different titles.

• Tom Holland, Jacob Batalon, and Zendaya made a series of Instagram posts that only increased the intrigue and mystery surrounding the much-awaited upcoming film.

• We think it may bring us closer to confirm something we're kind of all expecting.

There's some big news for those of us living in Marvel Cinematic Universe land, and we're going to get deep into it: the third movie in the Spider-Man series has a title, and it's Spider-Man: No Way Home. And that's really the real title, despite some misdirection beforehand.

The title was revealed in a video shared by Marvel Studios, featuring stars Tom Holland (who plays Peter Parker/Spider-Man), Zendaya (who plays MJ) and Jacob Batalon (who plays Ned) leaving the office of Jon Watts, who's directed all three of Spider-Man's solo MCU adventures (and is also slated to direct the studio's upcoming Fantastic Four reboot).

While the three had previously been "fed fake titles"—see a bit more on that below—they came to realize that it's because Holland notoriously has an issue with revealing spoilers before the movies are even released. While the actors within the video didn't procure the name of the title they were hoping to, they walked past a white board revealing the real, very real, very official title of the movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home, complete with notes and deliberations seen all around it.

There was some title uncertainty before No Way Home was officially revealed as the title.

Holland previously shared an Instagram revealing a new still and the "title" of the new Spider-Man movie. "So excited to announce the new Spider-Man title," he wrote. "Can’t wait for you lot to see what we have been up to. Love from Atlanta."

His post contained a new still photo of himself (as Peter Parker), Zendaya (as MJ), and Jacob Batalon (as Ned) looking up at something, and a title: Spider-Man: Phone Home.

The only problem, however, is that this...may not be the real title. Batalon and Zendaya both commented because they had posted different movie titles on their own respective Instagram accounts. We'll get to that in a moment. "What the hell," Zendaya wrote. Batalon also commented: "Woah woah.. wait.. why is your different?!?🤯"

So, well, we may all be back at square one.

The runway toward the third installment of the MCU/Tom Holland Spider-Man series has been a long one, and we've still got plenty ways to go. Details around the movie have been kept so secret that we still don't officially know the plot of the movie, a significant portion of the cast, or still, even what the title is. And hell, remember that before production began there was even a time where it was unclear if Spider-Man would even be allowed to remain a part of the MCU.

Batalon dropped his own Instagram post around the same time as Holland. "We’re so excited to share the TITLE of our new movie!! Swipe right for the big reveal!!🤩😝😱also enjoy this exclusive still from the movie, just an extra gift from us😘" His still was a shot of the three characters looking in some sort of basement, and a different title: Spider-Man: Home-Wrecker.

Holland commented, "Wait what?!?!?!?," an actually very funny over exaggerated and incredulous post. "I’m confused," Zendaya wrote.

Many fans confused by the differing titles were likely hoping that Zendaya would post one of the two titles, confirming it as the real one. But Marvel was not going to make things that easy. About an hour later, Zendaya posted her own Instagram. "So excited to announce the new Spider-Man title," she wrote. "So proud of this one...FOS is back! (Friends of Spider-Man)" The post came complete with a still of the three looking at a laptop, and yet another title: Spider-Man: Home Slice.

"Right... I have had enough of this! I’m calling Jon," Holland wrote, referring to the film's director Jon Watts. Batalon agreed: "Okay now this is just ridiculous... we have to talk to Jon!!😤"

It sounds like the starring trio of the movie plan on getting everything straighened out with their boss soon.

Those weren't the only notable comments on the Instagrams. Tony Revolori, who's played the trio's cocky classmate, Flash, in both Spider-Man MCU films so far, commented with three laughing emojis on Holland's post, and said "Spider-Man: Ese Homie" on Batalon's.

Mark Ruffalo, who's appeared in six MCU films as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, added his own comment on Holland's post, saying "Dood, Barry...". Ruffalo's "Barry" is referring to Marvel Studios' Head of Security Barry Curtis, who's also appeared as a security guard in many MCU movies and shows. Ruffalo has a running joke where he thinks he's going to be in trouble with Barry following a spoiler. After he made a comment about how "everyone dies" in Infinity War in 2017 on Good Morning America, Ruffalo asked Don Cheadle (who was doing the interview with him) “Am I in trouble? Is Barry going to be mad at me?” It's a great bit.

So what does this actually mean for the Spider-Man: No Way Home?

Well, that's a great question. The long-running rumors have said that the third Spider-Man movie will deal with a live-action spider-verse, and, thus, the multi-verse, something already kind of touched upon in 2018's Academy Award-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Holland has denied rumors that state past Spider-Mans Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will appear in the upcoming film, but we're not quite buying it. There's also word that past villains Alfred Molina (as Doc Ock), Jamie Foxx (as Electro), and even Willem Dafoe (as Norman Osborn/Green Goblin) could all be appearing. And we know that Benedict Cumberbatch will show up as Doctor Strange. All of this seems to heavily point toward a multiverse storyline on the horizon.

The reveal of three different fake titles feels like further evidence toward the multiverse that the entire MCU seems to be building toward. Three titles = three realities, right? None of these three titles turned out to be the actual title of the movie, but it does add more fuel to the fire of what we think is coming.

A tweet from a user named @_TrueVerdict also made an interesting point, suggesting that each fake title contains a parallel to a past (or present) Spider-Man universe.

WandaVision recently hinted at both Nexus beings and at a character from another reality entering the MCU, making the multiverse seem even more possible. It's also been confirmed that WandaVision's lead, Elizabeth Olsen, will appear as Wanda Maximoff alongside Cumberbatch in the aptly-titled Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, due out in March 2022 (a few months following Spider-Man 3's planned December 2021 release).

Marvel Studios has big plans for 2021. We already know that there are five TV series planned for the year, with WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel, and What if.... What remains to be seen, however, is if Covid-19 will let up enough for the plans for four feature films to be released theatrically. Spider-Man: No Way Home is scheduled as a Christmas as of now, but it's easy to see that release date pushed back if Black Widow, Shang Chi and the Legend of the 10 Rings, and Eternals are unable to achieve proper theatrical releases.

We're looking for some Spider-Man answers as soon as possible, so just yet another reason to hope for the Covid-19 era to come to a close sooner rather than later. Fingers crossed.
