No. 5 Lady Pirates sail to sectional title

Feb. 5—LAWRENCEBURG — Sectional 29, or the EIAC sectional as some called it, came down to rivals Greensburg and Batesville for the title Saturday. Greensburg's defense held the Lady Bulldogs to just 22 points in the game as the Lady Pirates won the sectional championship 41-22.

The No. 5 Lady Pirates improve to 21-4 on the season. Batesville ends the season at 16-10. Greensburg faces No. 9 Scottsburg (21-4) in the 4 p.m. regional final game at Charlestown this Saturday. The winner advances to the semistate.

Both teams struggled offensively early in the championship game. Greensburg held an 8-4 lead after the first quarter. At the half, the Lady Pirates led 14-8 in a low-scoring first half.

Greensburg's offense got things going in the second half and the defense continued to stall Batesville. In the third quarter, Greensburg outscored Batesville 11-6 to lead 25-14.

In the final quarter, Greensburg doubled up the Lady Bulldogs 16-8 to secure the 41-22 victory.

Coach Simpson was very pleased with the Lady Pirates' defensive effort and execution in the sectional.

For the game, Batesville shot 27 percent from the field and did not connect on a 3-pointer. Greensburg shot just 26 percent from the field, making the defensive effort all that more important.

On the glass, the Lady Pirates out-rebounded Batesville 32-22. Batesville outscored Greensburg 16-14 in the paint.

A huge factor was the turnovers forced by Greensburg's defense. The Lady Bulldogs had 19 turnovers, compared to eight for Greensburg. Off those miscues, Greensburg outscored Batesville 13-4. Greensburg tallied 11 steals in the game.

Leah West led the Lady Pirates in scoring with 11 points. Aly Powers added nine points. Mylie Wilkison had eight points. Claire Larrison scored six points. Carlee Adams added five points and Mary Harmon had two points.

On the glass, Powers pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Larrison grabbed five rebounds.

Larrison had a team-high two assists. Harmon, Emma McQueen, Powers, Wilkison and West all had one assist. Harmon had a team-high five steals.

For Batesville, Alyson Peters led the way in scoring with 10 points. Sophie Gesell added six points. Kaylin Kathman had four points and Claire Saner had two points. Gesell grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Peters had four rebounds. Kathman dished out a team-high three assists.

Greensburg reached the sectional title game with a 40-28 victory over host Lawrenceburg Friday in the semifinal.

The Lady Pirates' defense was solid once again, limiting Lawrenceburg to 27 percent shooting from the field and forcing 12 turnovers.

Harmon led all scorers with 13 points to go with six rebounds and two assists. Larrison scored 11 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Wilkison added nine points, two rebounds and a team-high four steals. West finished with five points and four rebounds. McQueen had one point, one rebound and two steals. Powers added one point and four rebounds. Adams had one rebound.
