No. 10 Varum eliminates Asher boys

Feb. 29—BRIDGE CREEK — The 17th-ranked Asher Indians saw their playoff run fall one game short of a berth in the state tournament after a 56-43 loss to No. 10 Varnum in the Class B Area Tournament consolation championship game Saturday at Bridge Creek High School.

The Indians, who defeated No. 20 Carney and No. 8 Earlsboro to make it to Saturday, saw their season come to an end at 21-10.

The Whippets advanced to the Class B State Tournament with a 24-7 mark.

Varnum 56, Asher 43

Asher stood toe-to-toe with Varnum throughout the first half. The Indians led 14-13 after one quarter and carried a slim 24-22 lead into halftime. However, the Whippets used a 19-9 surge in the third quarter to go on top 41-33 and ended the game on a 15-10 run.

Mikey Vanschuyver led the Asher offense with 13 points and sank 3-of-4 free throws. Tristan Reese also hit double figures with 22 points.

Gunnar Leham sank one 3-pointer and added seven points for the Indians. Raygan Kuhlman went 4-of-4 from the charity stripe for all four of his points and Will Ranells sank a 3-pointer for the locals.

Varnum got a game-best 16 points from Christian Brager. CJ Bernard also hit double digits with 13 points. Both players made one 3-point shot.

Kylan Mack just missed double figures for the Whippets with nine points.

Vanum made 11-of-19 free throws in the contest while Asher finished 10-of-14 from the stripe.
