Rising Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic suffered a nasty ankle sprain Thursday night when he stepped on Jerian Grant’s foot while driving to the basket against the Chicago Bulls late in the second quarter.

Jokic got fouled on the play and toughed it out to shoot his free throws. He tried to leave the court before his foul shots, but returned after trainers and teammates apparently explained to him that he wouldn’t be allowed to play on if he didn’t shoot them, per NBA rules.

It was to no avail, as the Nuggets ruled him out for the night with an ankle sprain.
