Nike suspended its relationship with Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood on Monday after he was arrested on allegations of rape and abuse.
Greenwood was suspended by Manchester United on Sunday after several graphic images and audio clips surfaced on social media that showed injuries he allegedly inflicted on his girlfriend and audio of him allegedly assaulting her.
He was then arrested on Sunday by the Greater Manchester Police, and is still in custody on Monday.
“We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and we will continue to closely monitor the situation,” Nike said, via The Athletic.
Photos and audio were posted to the woman’s Instagram account, though the posts have since been deleted. They contained graphic images including bruises on different parts of her body and a bloodied lip. There was also an audio clip that appeared to feature a man assaulting a woman.
One photo had the caption: “To everyone who wants to know what Mason Greenwood actually does to me.”
The posts, which are graphic and disturbing, have been saved elsewhere on social media.
Greenwood was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault on Sunday after police launched an investigation. Police said in a statement on Monday that he was still in custody.
“Detectives have been granted additional time to speak to a man in his 20s who is being held on suspicion of rape and assault of a woman,” GMP said in a statement, via The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell. “The suspect was arrested yesterday afternoon and remains in custody. Enquiries are ongoing and the victim is being offered specialist support.”
Greenwood is under contract with Manchester United through 2025. He has scored six goals so far this season.
The club has suspended him and said Monday that it won’t provide any legal support. He has arranged personal representation, per The Athletic.
