‘Night Court’ Pilot Starring John Larroquette and Melissa Rauch Ordered by NBC

Court is back in session at NBC. The network has formally given a pilot order to a spinoff of “Night Court” led by original series star John Larroquette and “The Big Bang Theory’s” Melissa Rauch.

The pilot, produced by Warner Bros. Television and Universal Television, was penned by “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” production alum Dan Rubin, who will serve as both executive producer and writer on the reboot.

The original series that aired on NBC from 1984-1992 starred Harry Anderson as an offbeat judge who worked the late shift at a Manhattan court house. Rauch will play the jurist daughter of Anderson’s Judge Harry Stone. She presides over the same court and tries to bring order to its crew of oddballs and cynics, most notably former night court prosecutor Dan Fielding (Larroquette).

Executive producing alongside Rubin are Rauch and her spouse Winston Rauch for After January Productions. Larroquette is also executive producing.

“My intention was purely to be behind the camera on this project, but my plans quickly changed after falling in love with the incredible script from the brilliant mind of Dan Rubin,” Rauch said in a statement following the pilot pickup order announcement. “I couldn’t be more thrilled to join forces with Dan, the immense talent that is John Larroquette, and the two powerhouse institutions of comedy that are NBC and Warner Bros. to bring ‘Night Court’ back to television.”

Most recently, Rauch was seen on “The Bronze,” the Official Opening Night Film Selection of the Sundance Film Festival. The movie, which Rauch starred, produced and co-wrote along with her husband and fellow producer, was released by Sony Pictures Classics. She also recently produced and co-wrote and starred in a stage production of “The Secret Lunches of Chelsea & Ivanka” at Joe’s Pub in NYC with Winston Rauch. The Rauch’s After January banner has several other projects currently in development with Warner Bros. TV.

Previously, Larroquette was seen on “The Good Fight” on CBS All Access, and starred on the CBS comedy series “Me, Myself & I.” His work on ABC’s “The Practice” garnered Larroquette one of his five Emmy wins. The others came for his long run as a supporting player on “Night Court.”

Rubin’s scribe creds include “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” where he was nominated for four Emmys and three WGA awards, he also continued his work with Tina Fey and other “Unbreakable” producers for the upcoming adult animated sitcom “Mulligan” at Netflix. He has also worked on “Outmatched,” “Happy Endings,” “Scrubs,” “Worst Week” and “The Michael J. Fox Show.”
