Nicolas Claxton progressing, but return still a ways away

·1 min read

The Brooklyn Nets have had to make moves to bolster the big man position because they’ve become thin there since Jarrett Allen was sent to Cleveland in the James Harden trade, but they’ve had someone on their roster since the start of the season who might be able to help address that need — Nic Claxton. Only problem is Brooklyn’s 2019 draft pick has been sidelined since he underwent successful arthroscopic labrum repair surgery on his left shoulder in late June.

While Steve Nash told reporters on a Zoom call Monday Claxton’s return is still “a good three weeks” away, Brooklyn’s head coach did say, “there’s progress and there’s what seems like momentum and some light at the end of the tunnel.” Claxton isn’t working with the “stay-ready group” yet, but he has taken a step toward that.

“It’s definitely been a process. We’re not trying to rush anything,” Claxton said on Monday. “Really build my lower body up slowly, and that’s really helped me be able to work on my overall body. … When it’s time for me to be back — I’ve started to play some 3-on-3 with the coach — when that time comes, I’ll be ready and I’ll be the best version of myself.”
