DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - The Detroit Red Wings have signed forward Evgeny Svechnikov to a one-year contract extension. Svechnikov had 25 points and 61 penalty minutes in 51 games with the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins and also appeared in four games with Detroit last season. He was originally drafted by the Red Wings in the first round in 2015 and missed the 2018-19 season with a knee injury.
The New York Rangers will pick first overall in the 2020 NHL Draft. Red Wings fans already are dealing with a kick in the gut after not cashing in on the NHL’s lottery system, despite a historically godawful season in which they failed to eclipse 20 wins. I feel like this could soften the blow for Wings fans a little — there was plenty of worry that the pick could end up falling to a division rival, or get wasted and thrown away to Edmonton.
It was at Bowling Green after a game against Alaska Fairbanks in January 2017 that Fitzhugh told his mom about his dream. "I remember calling her and saying, 'This game went fantastic and I'm now putting all my eggs into the hockey basket. We're going to the NHL,'" Fitzhugh said.
