Article content Kyle Dubas tried to put his best spin on the Maple Leafs’ fortunes — a week before he could lose his starting goaltender, a top scorer, a physical defenceman and risk a contract spat with a young blueliner, all while in a salary cap bind to keep his team in the Eastern Conference playoff race. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, October 12, when the Toronto Maple Leafs kick off their regular-season schedule. It’s a classic matchup for the Leafs to open up their schedule, as they face off against the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre on the second Wednesday of October. One night later, they’ll have their home opener against the Washington Capitals, before a divisional matchup against the Ottawa Senators on October 15 to make it three games in four days.
I wholeheartedly agree that the Maple Leafs need to change an age-old pattern and that the change should start with Sandin. But, I disagree as to which pattern they need to change and with the Old Prof’s conclusion as to which is the best direction to go in regard to Sandin. The pattern the Old Prof said needed to be changed was the pattern of over-valuating the Maple Leafs’ own prospects and younger players on the team to the point where these players are signed for more than their market value.
