    If there was any doubt Andrei Markov had played his last game with the Montreal Canadiens, the Habs officially cut ties with the 16-year veteran on Thursday, announcing they would not re-sign the defenseman for the 2017-18 season and hosting an impromptu conference call, during which Markov unveiled plans to return to Russia and play in the Kontinental Hockey League. "I wanted to stay with the Canadiens for the rest of my career, but it won't happen," Markov said, according to NHL.com. "It's a business. ...     Rookie coaches all the rage -- with a Hitch

    For the men who toil behind NHL benches, the hours are long and the leashes are short. Three of those seven are first-timers at this level, an extension of a hiring trend that has resulted in nearly a third of NHL teams being helmed by rookie bench bosses. Hitchcock, 65, is by far the most experienced coach among the new hires, and the peak of his 20-season career came during his previous stint in Dallas. Derian Hatcher, the defenseman who captained both of those Dallas teams as well as a Philadelphia Flyers squad coached by Hitchcock, said that the veteran coach's attention to detail and emphasis on being responsible defensively make him a good choice to shore up the current team, which has struggled on both fronts.
