The Tampa Bay Lightning won't be going down without a fight. They are the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions after all. On Friday night, the Lightning denied the Colorado Avalanche of capturing the Cup, notching a 3-2 victory in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final at Ball Arena in Denver.
Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar lamented a controversial tripping call on star defenseman Cale Makar that led to a Tampa Bay Lightning power-play goal in the Bolts' 3-2 win in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final on Friday. According to ESPN's Kristen Shilton, Bednar questioned the validity of the call, saying: "I didn't love that call, just because I don't think there was any intent there. I don't even think he was checking that guy [Ondrej Palat].
The revelry will have to wait. The Tampa Bay Lightning stopped a Mile High Celebration Friday night, even as thousands of Coloradans gathered in downtown Denver hoping to mark the city’s first major professional championship since the 2016 Super Bowl. Instead, the Colorado Avalanche will head back to Florida, with hopes of bringing back a Stanley Cup.
