Between their late season shellackings at the hands of the New York Islanders and the Tom Wilson incident against the Washington Capitals, the Rangers entered the 2021 offseason wanting to be tougher to play against. The 2012 fight night against the New Jersey Devils saw the team ice three enforcers in Stu Bickel, Brandon Prust, and Mike Rupp to start that game and send a message.
While the front office worked under the cap to form the new lines, the top two centers will need to be the production leaders of this young team from the beginning of 2022-23. Of course with the pressure to stay competitive in the tough Metropolitan Division, the Rangers’ lines will need to come out of the gate hot. The team has some big shoes to fill – their own.
As the Rangers opted against naming a captain for fourth consecutive season, Goodrow ended up as one of six players named as an alternate captain at the conclusion of training camp. Goodrow was the only player on the roster with championship pedigree, but even with that experience, being named an alternate captain was a shock to many. As for his on-ice contributions, Goodrow’s reputation was that of a versatile, defensively responsible forward.
