Last month, New York Rangers winger Sean Avery(notes) made waves (and some new enemies) when he became the first pro athlete in New York to publicly support marriage equality with an endorsement ad for Human Rights Campaign's "New Yorkers for Marriage Equality Campaign."
On Tuesday, Avery was in Albany to help drum up more support for a bill that would legalize same-sex marriage in the state — a bill that's one vote away from passing. Here he is at a press conference with actress Cynthia Nixon:
Avery started his pitch with "I usually get extremely nervous when I walk into buildings that look like courthouses," which earned a laugh from everyone but Gary Bettman.
"If you're on the fence, or you're a little bit nervous about being OK with it, that's fine. That's why I'm here to get that point across, and help as much as I can," he said. "I'm going to shore up a couple of votes, and do it as kindly and gently as I can."
Or if that doesn't work, he'll stand in front of their desks and wave his stick in front of their faces until the state congress passes a law banning the act.
After seeing him interact with Ms. Nixon, the answer is yes: We would pay to see a "Sex And The City 3" if Sean Avery were added to the cast as their bitchy new friend/Vogue intern. And if he gets to punch out Mario Cantone at some point in the film.
s/t to Jason for the story.
