At the end of the second period in last night's Minnesota Wild 4-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets, Pierre-Marc Bouchard(notes) and Matt Calvert(notes) were fighting for position during a faceoff when Bouchard's stick caught Calvert in the face:

Bouchard was given a double minor for high-sticking and according to Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos, he was also on the phone with Brendan Shanahan(notes) this afternoon before the Wild flew to New York for their matinee with the Islanders tomorrow.

This was the second incident in as many weeks between the two teams after James Wisniewski's(notes) late high hit on Cal Clutterbuck(notes) that earned Columbus' new defenseman an 8-game Shanaban.

As you saw in the video, Columbus head coach Scott Arniel wasn't happy that Bouchard only received the four-minute penalty and he expanded his thoughts after the game.

From the Columbus Dispatch:

"It's definitely an attempt to injure," Arniel said. "Our whole bench saw it. Their whole bench saw it.

"We want to talk about getting hit from behind and shots to the head, but we allow a guy to stay in the game after taking a baseball swing at a guy's face? That's a joke."

Calvert lost some teeth and required stitches in his lip to close the gash he received. He did return to the game in the third period. But if you look at the video, Calvert is the one lifting Bouchard's stick into his own face causing the damage.

If player's are to be responsible with their own sticks when dealing with opponents, so should be the case if they're the ones causing their own injury.

UPDATE: According to Kypreos, Bouchard has been given a 2-game suspension.
