Give the New Jersey Devils the man advantage, and good things happen … for the other team. Brandon Sutter's first period goal in the Carolina Hurricanes' 4-2 victory was the 11th shorthanded goal allowed by the Devils this season; then, with their goalie pulled and down a goal late in the third period, this happened:
Well, let it never be said Ilya Kovalchuk can't find the back of the net in a pressure situation …
A few more looks:
While it appeared Sutter may have gotten a stick on the puck, turns it the last Hurricanes player to touch the rubber was … Cam Ward.
It was the goalie's first NHL goal. So now comes that embarrassing moment in which we all point and laugh at the notable players the starting goaltender of the Carolina Hurricanes has scored more goals than this season:
Scott Gomez, Montreal Canadiens: 13 games, 0 goals.
Marty Reasoner, New York Islanders: 31 games, 0 goals.
Magnus Paajarvi, Edmonton Oilers: 25 games, 0 goals, demoted to AHL.
Philippe Dupuis, Toronto Maple Leafs: 30 games, 0 goals.
Colton Gillies, Minnesota Wild: 32 games, 0 goals.
Tim Jackman, Calgary Flames: 36 games, 0 goals.
Chris Thorburn, Winnipeg Jets: 35 games, 0 goals.
Zach Boychuk, Carolina Hurricanes: 13 games, 0 goals, demoted to AHL.
Watch out Hurricanes defenseman Jay Harrison, of the two goals this season … Cam Ward's comin' after you.
