Against the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday night, Adam McQuaid(notes) did as Adam McQuaid does: He tried to make an aggressive play in the Boston Bruins' defensive zone … and ended up paying the price on the end boards.

Sometimes, the worst headshots are the accidentally self-inflicted ones:

From NESN:

McQuaid didn't have much to celebrate on his 25th birthday as he lost his balance while the Bruins were killing a penalty midway through the third. He struck his head along the base of the boards and appeared dazed as he struggled to his feet and gamely tried to play on until the next whistle.

McQuaid was guided to the bench by Zdeno Chara(notes) and stayed on the bench briefly before the medical staff took him to the locker room.

He did not return to the game and coach Claude Julien did not have an update on his condition when he spoke to the media following the contest.

It's not the same situation -- the Bruins' defenseman clearly lost an edge Wednesday night -- but this McQuaid incident immediately brought back visions of his whiffed check against Mike Richards(notes), then of the Philadelphia Flyers, in the Eastern Conference semifinals:

We believe it was John McClane who said it best in "Die Hard 2": "How can the same [poop] happen to the same guy twice?!"

McQuaid missed the last two games of the Flyers series with a neck injury; we'll update here when the aftermath of this crash is revealed. But a quick note to the attending physicians: If he starts blabbering about being in a Dragon Boat with Kate Middleton, it's not a concussion-fueled delusion.
