Were it not for the Florida Everblades' neon-green monstrosities from Christmas, the CHL's Mississippi RiverKings would be your leaders for most awesomeness contained in a single hockey jersey this season.
When reader Jason S. told us about these wild turkey jerseys, we were wondering how, exactly, a minor league hockey team planned to incorporate bourbon into a sweater design. Ah, little did we know that Jason was not only a dedicated puckhead by a card-carrying member of the National Wild Turkey Federation, a national nonprofit conservation and hunting organization. And there are a few turkey hunts in Mississippi now and again.
The RiverKings partnered with the NWTF for a special promotion on Saturday, which the Foundation said would be "a fun night filled with activities to recognize NWTF members like a silent auction, gun blasts and more." (Once you have gun blasts, what more do you need?)
The RiverKings wore these jerseys on Saturday night for their game against the Dayton Gems, and then auctioned them off to the highest bidder afterwards.
Here's a look at the front and back of the jerseys:
Four reasons this jersey is one of the most incredible things we've ever seen:
1. It has giant wild turkey on it.
2. It has the backside of a wild turkey on it.
3. It has a turtle with a hunting rifle and matching cap on in, replacing the hockey stick and crown in the usual logo.
4. All of the above.
Finally, let's all be thankful that this promotion is taking place in Mississippi and not in a place where a PETA protest would have put these jerseys in mothballs before they hit the ice ...
Huge thanks to Keenan J. Slusher of the RiverKings for the images.
