Puck Daddy - NHL

Here are your Puck Headlines: A glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• Chris Nichols of Sportsnet makes a few good arguments against the proposed two-headed monster of Cristobal Huet and Nikolai Khabibulin for the Chicago Blackhawks. Like their salaries, the fact that neither of them are named Andy Moog or Grant Fuhr and, most importantly, that it royally sucks from a fantasy hockey perspective. [Sportsnet]

• The Pittsburgh Penguins are breaking ground on their new arena next week. Meanwhile, Pop Tarts Presents "American Idol Live!" will be appearing at the Sprint Center in Kansas City on August 29 and 30. [Post-Gazette]

• How Jews and Irish Catholics are finding common ground in coping with the Mats Sundin Saga. [Canucks and Beyond]

• Hockey equipment bags continue to be the preferred method of transport for marijuana smugglers. Even in Phoenix and Nebraska. [KETV]

• A really inspiring video in which a hockey photographer (who snapped the Sidney Crosby/flaming puck photo no less) that lost a cousin in Afghanistan and decided to help design goalie masks that honored fallen soldiers. [NHL Video]

• The Washington Capitals send out a fan survey to find out what kind of goodies they want during home game giveaways. Color us intrigued by the "playing cards with four Capitals players as different suits." Oh, and also by the "hard koozie," which you usually have to wait until after the game to find at Fadó. [On Frozen Blog]

• This column about Terry Murray joining the Los Angeles Kings has a little moss on it, but Dennis Bernstein can write the hell out of a left coast hockey story. "But there is a lone bright spot to this dilemma for the incredibly loyal fan base. If you call the Kings' ticket office today, you can get a better seat location this year as the season ticket fan base is eroding." [The Fourth Period]

• The day Wayne Gretzky broke his non-crying promise to Mark Messier. [Covered in Oil]

• Hey, whaddya know: Stamkos as finally been seen skating in a Tampa Bay Lightning sweater. [Lightning Strikes]

• Remember that charity drive by those Anaheim Ducks fans, in which money would be donated in the name of the player who scores the winning goal against Kevin Lowe and the Edmonton Oilers? Further details have come to light, including a donation mailing address.

• If you miss a drug test in Germany, there's only one way to avoid a suspension: Get sent to the Milwaukee Admirals of the AHL by the Nashville Predators. If we only knew that in high school. [CP]

• Finally, Ricki Dugdale of USA Hockey magazine writes a story about how "Blogging Moves Mainstream To Take Hockey World By Storm" that achieves a rather amazing hat-trick of ineptitude.

First, it fails to actually, you know, quote a hockey blogger ... at least one not affiliated with USA TODAY. Second, it includes on its "10 Great Hockey Blogs" at least three of them that don't actually provide links to other blogs in their content, which really isn't in keeping with the spirit of the medium. (But kudos to Kukla, Mirtle, Ovadia, Tom Benjamin and CapsChick for getting some love.)

Finally, it includes this passage ...

Some bloggers tend to post anything and everything, regardless of truth or accuracy, which can create problems because blogs that have been established as reliable must fight harder to be recognized among the established media.

... and then ranks this gentleman at No. 3 on its list. Uh-huh.
