The most intriguing detail in the news that Sidney Crosby(notes) will miss tonight's game at the Montreal Canadiens was "when?" rather than "what?".

His first game after the Winter Classic saw Crosby play 19:03 and pick up a single assist in an 8-1 Pittsburgh Penguins rout of the Tampa Bay Lightning last night. It was in the Winter Classic on Saturday where the captain had his bell rung by David Steckel of the Washington Capitals on an incidental blindside hit (video).

With Coach Dan Bylsma saying Crosby would miss the game with "an unspecified upper-body injury," was it related to the Classic hit? From Sam Kasan of the Penguins' website:

"Sidney Crosby will not be playing tonight," head coach Dan Bylsma said. "He's returned to Pittsburgh and is being evaluated by our doctors for an upper-body injury. Matt Cooke(notes) will also not be in the lineup. He returned to Pittsburgh with Crosby for personal issues that he has to attend to."

Bylsma doesn't think Crosby's injury is long term. Crosby suffered the injury Wednesday night against Tampa Bay. "We knew at one point in the (Tampa) game last night and after the game, and waking up this morning we were seeing how he was reacting to his injury," Bylsma said. "When he woke up this morning we decided he was not going to play in the game tonight, and he'd be evaluated back in Pittsburgh.

So there you go. Bylsma said he doesn't see it as a long-term injury, either. Seth from Empty Netters has the line shuffling for the Penguins.

UPDATE: Bylsma said after his team's loss in Montreal that Crosby has a "mild concussion" and will miss about a week. When asked if Crosby has shown any signs of a concussion before Wednesday's win against Tampa, Bylsma said Crosby wasn't showing any signs of it. NHL Network showed a highlight of a hit from Victor Hedman(notes) that bounced Crosby's head off the glass in the Lightning game.

Yet John Shannon of Sportsnet dropped a bomb on Twitter: "Sources confirm that Crosby was indeed concussed on Steckel hit at WC...and played vs TB with mild concussion."
