NHL Plays will highlight the best and the most underrated daily fantasy options among forwards, defensemen and goaltenders.

Please note, these players were chosen early in the day, so make sure to check NBC Sports Edge’s player news for any lineup changes, injuries and potential changes in the crease for starting goaltenders.

Additionally, it is worth reminding everyone that FanDuel allows you to roster five players (a captain at 1.5 times the value and four other players and no goaltenders) with a salary cap of $55,000, while DraftKings has a cap of $50,000 for six players (a captain at 1-5 times the value and five other players). Yahoo has a $130 cap for five players (a superstar at 1.5 times the value as well as four other players).

The Vancouver Canucks face the Washington Capitals in the only game Sunday.

Players

John Carlson (Washington) - $12,000 (FanDuel), $14,400 (Draft Kings), $23 (Yahoo)

Carlson has gone four games without a point but still has 32 points in 38 games this season including four goals. Over the last five seasons, including this one, Carlson has been the leading scorer among defensemen in the NHL with 289 points and with only one game available today, he is the top blueliner in the matchup.

Alex Ovechkin (Washington) - $15,500 (FanDuel), $11,000 (Draft Kings), $34 (Yahoo)

Ovechkin scored once again on Saturday, his 25th of the season, second-best in the NHL. Not bad for a 36-year-old. It was his sixth empty net goal of the season and getting those opportunities just piles up the stats. Ovechkin is tied for second with Connor McDavid and Jonathan Huberdeau in points with 53, one behind Leon Draisaitl. He is a must-start.

J.T. Miller (Vancouver) – $13,500 (FanDuel), $8,400 (Draft Kings), $19 (Yahoo)

Miller has been in a bit of a slump as he has gone three consecutive games without a point. He still has 11 goals and 36 points in just 37 games as he is the Canucks leading point-getter. Miller has put together three strong seasons in Vancouver since his trade from Tampa Bay and is a good play on this day.

Garnet Hathaway (Washington) - $9,000 (FanDuel), $3,200 (Draft Kings), $15 (Yahoo)

Hathaway is closing in on a career year with seven goals and 13 points in 33 games. His career-best has been 11 goals and 19 points in 76 games with Calgary three seasons ago, one point more than last season in just 56 games.

Nils Hoglander (Vancouver) - $7,000 (FanDuel), $4,200 (Draft Kings), $10 (Yahoo)

Hoglander has scored only once since Dec. 11 and that was on New Year’s Day versus the Kraken. He has eight goals and 13 points in 37 games and should be able to pick up the pace the rest of the way as he averaged almost .5 points per game as a rookie last season with 13 goals and 27 points in 56 contests.

Ilya Samsonov (Washington) – No Value (FanDuel), $ 10,600 (Draft Kings), $30 (Yahoo)

There are no goaltenders in FanDuel so this is just for Draft Kings and Yahoo. Samsonov will get the start for the hometown Capitals as Vitek Vanecek was the starter on Saturday. He was shaky in his last start, giving up four goals on 16 shots to St. Louis but let’s throw that one aside as he was returning from COVID protocol. Overall, Samsonov is 13-3-3 with a 2.76 GAA and a .903 save percentage and should have the advantage Sunday afternoon in front of the home crowd.

Bargain Bin:

Tyler Motte (Vancouver) - $8,500 (FanDuel), $2,000 (Draft Kings), $14 (Yahoo), Tanner Pearson (Vancouver) - $9,500 (FanDuel), $5,400 (Draft Kings), $15 (Yahoo), Conor Garland (Vancouver) - $11,000 (Fan Duel), $7,400 (Draft Kings), $17 (Yahoo)
