NHL Plays: Saturday

Michael Finewax

NHL Plays will highlight the best and the most underrated daily fantasy options among forwards, defensemen and goaltenders.

Please note, these players were chosen early in the day, so make sure to check Rotoworld’s player news for any lineup changes, injuries and potential changes in the crease for starting goaltenders.

Additionally, it is worth reminding everyone that FanDuel allows you to roster nine players (2C, 2W, 2D, 2UTIL, 1G) with a salary cap of $55,000, while DraftKings has a cap of $50,000 for nine players (2C, 3W, 2D, 1G, 1UTIL). Yahoo has a $200 cap for nine players (2C, 3W, 2D, 2G).

There are four evening games in the NHL on Saturday.

Forwards

Connor McDavid (Edmonton) - C - $8,900 (FanDuel), $8,600 (Draft Kings), $35 (Yahoo)

McDavid has been unbelievable, especially of late as he was the second star of the week, scoring four times and adding eight assists. The Edmonton superstar has 24 points which is two better than teammate Leon Draisaitl and seven ahead of the third place Mitch Marner of the Maple Leafs.

J.T. Miller (Vancouver) - W - $6,800 (FanDuel), $5,300 (DraftKings), $21 (Yahoo)

A real bargain in DraftKings, Miller has been a stud since coming over from Tampa Bay in the 2019 off-season. He had 72 points last season and has continued to be at or near the top of the Canucks scoring parade. Miller missed the first three games of the season but had three goals and 13 points in 11 games since then.

Evander Kane (San Jose) - W - $6,100 (FanDuel), $5,100 (DraftKings), $17 (Yahoo)

Kane had only one goal in his last five games heading into action on Friday but turned it around against the Ducks with a goal and an assist as well as five shots on goal and four hits. That gives Kane seven points in nine games and with the Sharks and Ducks going at it again on Saturday, Kane looks to be a good play.

Bargain Bin: Mathew Barzal (New York Islanders) - C - $6,900 (FanDuel), $7,200 (Draft Kings), $23 (Yahoo), Elias Lindholm (Calgary) - C - $6,000 (FanDuel), $6,300 (DraftKings), $19 (Yahoo) Jason Zucker (Pittsburgh) – W - $5,800 (FanDuel) $4,200 (DraftKings), $17 (Yahoo), Kailer Yamamoto (Edmonton) – W - $5,100 (FanDuel), $4,900 (Draft Kings), $18 (Yahoo)

Defensemen:

Quinn Hughes (Vancouver) - $5,800 (FanDuel), $5,400 (DraftKings), $19 (Yahoo)

Hughes leads all defensemen in points with 15, which is also good enough for a tie for fifth place among NHL scorers. Hughes has had problems in his own end and is a minus-10 thus far in 14 games but the category does not count in DFS and that makes Hughes a must-start.

Morgan Rielly (Toronto) - $5,200 (FanDuel), $5,800 (DraftKings), $19 (Yahoo)

Rielly is hot with eight assists in his last five games as the Maple Leafs have been a scoring machine in the North. Rielly had only an opening night goal in overtime as his only points in his first six games but turned it around when Toronto went out West and it has continued at home as he had two helpers against Vancouver Thursday, Toronto’s opponent once again on Saturday.

Bargain Bin:

Rasmus Andersson (Calgary) - $4,500 (FanDuel), $5,200 (DraftKings), $15 (Yahoo), Pierre-Olivier Joseph (Pittsburgh) $3,700 (FanDuel), $3,300 (Draft Kings), $14 (Yahoo)

Goaltenders:

Semyon Varlamov (New York Islanders) - $7,700 (FanDuel), $8,200 (Draft Kings), $36 (Yahoo)

There are not a lot of goaltenders to choose from Saturday. We are shying away from Jacob Markstrom as they play the high-scoring Oilers, leaving Varlamov as the best bet. Varlamov has been quite good this season but his quick start in which he gave up one goal in his first three games, stopping 81-of-82 shots have carried him. He is 3-2-1 with a 2.00 GAA and a .924 save percentage and will look to turn it around after a couple of losses on the road to Washington and an overtime loss to the Flyers.

Other plays: Frederik Andersen (Toronto) - $8,100 (FanDuel), $8,400 (DraftKings), $31 (Yahoo)
