NHL Plays will highlight the best and the most underrated daily fantasy options among forwards, defensemen and goaltenders.
Please note, these players were chosen early in the day, so make sure to check Rotoworld’s player news for any lineup changes, injuries and potential changes in the crease for starting goaltenders.
Additionally, it is worth reminding everyone that FanDuel allows you to roster nine players (2C, 2W, 2D, 2UTIL 1G) with a salary cap of $55,000, while DraftKings has a cap of $50,000 for nine players (2C, 3W, 2D, 1G, 1UTIL) and Yahoo has a $200 budget for nine players (2C, 3W, 2D, 2G).

Nathan MacKinnon (Colorado) – C - $8,800 FanDuel, $8,500 DraftKings, $34 Yahoo
Even at that high price, MacKinnon is still worthy of consideration. He’s one of the league’s top forwards, having finished with over 90 points in each of his last three campaigns and the only thing that’s going to prevent him from extending that streak is the fact that this is a shortened season. He already has two goals and seven points in four games in 2020-21 and is on a three-game multi-point streak.
Evgeni Malkin (Pittsburgh) – C - $7,700 FanDuel, $6,300 DraftKings, $30 Yahoo
This is more of a DraftKings recommendation where his salary has gone from $7,200 at the start of the season to just $6,300 now, but he’s worth considering in all daily leagues. Malkin was held off the scoresheet in his first three games before scoring a goal on Tuesday. He’s due for a breakout game and that could come tonight.
Mark Stone (Vegas) – W - $7,600 FanDuel, $6,500 DraftKings, $26 Yahoo
Stone is typically a great forward, but he’s been especially effective lately. He has two goals and seven points in his last four games, recording at least a point in each of those contests. It wouldn’t be surprising to see him build on that early season momentum.
Phil Kessel (Arizona) – W - $6,800 FanDuel, $5,400 DraftKings, $17 Yahoo
Kessel’s first season with the Arizona Coyotes left plenty to be desired, but he seems to be bouncing back this season. He already has four goals in four contests, making him a very nice bet at his current price.
Anthony Mantha (Detroit) – W - $6,300 FanDuel, $5,600 DraftKings, $17 Yahoo
Mantha, like the Red Wings in general, has quietly gotten off to a solid start this season with a goal and three points in four games. He’ll look to continue that on Friday against the lowly Chicago Blackhawks.
Bargain Bin: Tomas Hertl (SJS) - $6,100 FanDuel/$5,900 DraftKings/$20 Yahoo, Viktor Arvidsson (NAS) - $5,700 FanDuel/$5,500 DraftKings/$18 Yahoo, Matt Duchene (NAS) - $5,600 FanDuel/$4,800 DraftKings/$18 Yahoo, Clayton Keller (ARI) - $5,600 FanDuel/$5,500 DraftKings/$17 Yahoo, Kailer Yamamoto (EDM) - $5,400 FanDuel/$4,500 DraftKings/$17 Yahoo, Pavel Buchnevich (NYR) - $5,400 FanDuel/$5,500 DraftKings/$19 Yahoo.
Shea Theodore (Vegas) - $6,200 FanDuel, $6,100 DraftKings, $24 Yahoo
Theodore scored two goals on Wednesday, giving him four points in four games this season. He’s a great offensive defenseman in general and is even more appealing while he’s hot.
Darnell Nurse (Edmonton) - $4,300 FanDuel, $4,500 DraftKings, $17 Yahoo
If you need a cheaper option, then Nurse is worth a look. He’s off to an okay start with a goal and an assist in five contests this season. He’s not the best offensive defenseman out there, but he finished with a respectable 33 points in 71 contests last season, so he can provide good value at that price point.
Bargain Bin: Jakob Chychrun (ARI) - $4,100 FanDuel/$5,400 DraftKings/$17 Yahoo, Alec Martinez (VGK) - $4,100 FanDuel/$4,700 DraftKings/$17 Yahoo, Adam Fox (NYR) - $4,000 FanDuel/$5,100 DraftKings/$19 Yahoo.
Anton Khudobin (Dallas) - $7,900 FanDuel, $7,900 DraftKings, $34 Yahoo
The Stars will be playing in their delayed season opener on Friday and Khudobin is likely to be the starter. He had a 2.22 GAA and .930 save percentage in 30 regular season games last season and then helped lead the Stars to the Stanley Cup Final, so his price in FanDuel and DraftKings is really good with that in mind. He’s not as cheap in Yahoo, but there’s a good chance that he’ll have a strong start against Nashville, so he’s worth considering regardless.
