10 glorious Phil Kessel moments we'll never forget

Two-time Cup champ, new NHL

There's never been another hockey player like Phil Kessel.

The 35-year-old, who’s playing in his first season with the Vegas Golden Knights, has become one of the game's great characters known for his fun-loving antics — both on and off the ice. And the good times never seem to end for the NHL's new ironman.

Hockey fans have been treated to several iconic moments from “Phil The Thrill” but which ones stand out the most? Let’s explore his 17 NHL seasons and rank the most memorable of the bunch.

10. Kessel’s NHL debut versus Florida

Starting at the beginning, Kessel was selected fifth overall by the Boston Bruins in 2006 and it wasn’t long before he arrived in the NHL. The Madison, Wisconsin, native debuted against the Florida Panthers on Oct. 6, 2006, registering two shots on goal in 14:05 minutes.

9. First NHL goal against Buffalo

It’s always a special moment when a player notches their first NHL goal, and for Kessel, his came during his seventh career contest. After securing his first career assist three games earlier, he found the back of the net for the first time versus the Buffalo Sabres on Oct. 21, 2006.

8. Kessel selected last in the 2011 All-Star draft

The first-ever All-Star Game fantasy draft was a forgettable one for Kessel, who was ultimately chosen last after everyone else was selected. He did, however, receive a new car in the end.

7. “Good one, Randy”

Leading up to the 2014 Winter Classic between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings, the NHL decided to document each team as they prepared for the annual outdoor game. A decision all hockey fans are thankful for.

Because of that, fans received a glimpse of the banter between Kessel and former head coach Randy Carlyle after he arrived late to practice, leading to the infamous quote: “Good one, Randy.”

6. Pierre McGuire asks Kessel about his breath

Following Game 3 of the 2016 Eastern Conference Final, Kessel was interviewed by reporter Pierre McGuire after Pittsburgh’s 4-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning. McGuire initially asked about his "breath" (meaning his conditioning level) but it certainly didn’t come across that way.

In classic Kessel form, he provided a hilarious response while having quite a laugh about it himself.

5. Kessel wins first Stanley Cup with Penguins

The Penguins ultimately defeated the Lightning 4-3 in the best-of-seven series, advancing to the Stanley Cup Final. Soon after, they moved past the San Jose Sharks in six games, earning Kessel his first career championship.

4. Feud between Kessel and Dave Feschuk boils over

Dealing with the Toronto media isn’t always easy, especially when you are constantly losing each game, but that became even tougher for Kessel towards the end of his tenure with the Maple Leafs.

Things became heated with local reporter Dave Feschuk after he questioned whether Kessel believes he’s a difficult player to coach. Suffice to say, it didn’t end well for Feschuk.

3. Kessel almost gets mugged by John Scott

Kessel learned the hard way in 2013 why John Scott was known as one of the toughest enforcers in the league. Actually, it appears he already knew.

2. Kessel becomes NHL’s new "ironman"

Playing in his 990th consecutive game on Tuesday, Kessel broke Keith Yandle’s ironman record while also scoring his 400th career goal as the Golden Knights beat the San Jose Sharks 4-2.

1. Kessel eats hot dogs out of the Stanley Cup

No moment, however, is more infamous than when Kessel celebrated his second straight Stanley Cup championship by eating hot dogs on a golf course out of the Cup. It doesn’t get much better than that — especially when you learn the history behind the infamous photo. Toronto-based sports reporter Steve Simmons has never lived this one down.
