NHL notebook: Leafs move on from Lamoriello at GM

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Monday that Hall of Famer Lou Lamoriello will not return as general manager for the 2018-19 season.

However, according to the statement the team released announcing the news, Lamoriello, 75, isn't leaving the organization, as he will transition to a senior adviser role.

Team president Brendan Shanahan said in a statement: "I will now focus all of my attention towards making a decision regarding our next general manager."

Lamoriello helped oversee a rebuilding process that began with the first overall pick in the 2016 NHL Draft and saw the Maple Leafs return to the Stanley Cup playoffs the following season. Toronto went 49-26-7 during the 2017-18 regular season to finish third in the Atlantic Division with 105 points but was eliminated by the Boston Bruins in seven games in the first round of the playoffs.

--The Carolina Hurricanes terminated the contract of Ron Francis less than two months after demoting him as general manager.

The Hurricanes announced the dismissal of Francis, who was reassigned to president of hockey operations when demoted in early March.

Francis, 55, served as general manager for just shy of four years. He was unable to end the franchise's playoff drought that dates back to 2009. Francis served 12 years in the Carolina front office in a variety of roles and was a Hall of Famer as a player, setting the Hurricanes franchise record for goals with 382.

--Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson will not face a disciplinary hearing for a Game 2 hit on the Pittsburgh Penguins' Brian Dumoulin and will thus avoid any suspension, according to multiple reports.

The play happened with 15:34 to play in the second period and Washington leading 3-0. As Dumoulin skated the puck around the back of the Penguins' net, he was stood up by Alexander Ovechkin. As Dumoulin quickly stopped to brace for the hit from Ovechkin, Wilson skated around Dumoulin to chase after the puck. Dumoulin turned his head away from Ovechkin, and Wilson's shoulder hit Dumoulin in the head.

No penalty was called on the play, and the Penguins have yet to announce Dumoulin's status for Game 3 on Tuesday in Pittsburgh.
