The NHL announced Wednesday that San Jose Sharks LW Evander Kane has been fined for elbowing Washington Capitals defender Radko Gudas in the head during Tuesday night's game.

Kane was fined $5,000, which is the maximum fine under the current collective bargaining agreement. The hit in question came toward the end of the third period of the Capitals' 5-2 win over the Sharks.

Kane raised his elbow and took a shot right at the face of Gudas, a hit that was angled away from even being a play for the puck.

Gudas is day-to-day after the hit and may miss Wednesday night's game against the Los Angeles Kings.
