NHL Draft Lottery: Blackhawks’ odds of picking in top two originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

The NHL Draft Lottery is set for Tuesday night, and the Chicago Blackhawks are in a unique position, as there is a chance that they could take their first-round pick back from the Columbus Blue Jackets if the ping pong balls go their way.

The Blackhawks sent a conditional first-round pick to the Blue Jackets as part of the trade that brought defenseman Seth Jones to Chicago. That pick is top-two protected in this year’s draft, meaning that if the Blackhawks win the lotteries for the first or second overall picks, they would regain their selection.

If that were to happen, then the Blackhawks would send their 2023 first-round selection to the Blue Jackets, regardless of where that pick ends up in the order.

So what are the odds that the Blackhawks will end up with their first round pick this season?

According to the NHL, there is a 15.4% chance that the Blackhawks will pick in the top two this season. They have a 7.5% chance of winning the first overall pick in the draft, and a 7.9% chance of taking home the second pick.

The Blackhawks had the NHL’s sixth-worst record this season, so the odds are in favor of their pick falling between sixth and eighth in the draft. There is a 34.1% chance that the sixth pick would go from Chicago to Columbus, and a 41.4% chance that the seventh overall pick will head to the Blue Jackets.

There is a 9.1% chance that the Blackhawks would drop back to eighth, with that pick heading to Columbus.

As for the Blue Jackets, they were one of the better non-playoff teams in the league, and they have a 5.3% chance of winning either the second or third overall pick in the draft. They have an 85.7% chance of picking 12th, with an 8.9% chance of moving back to 13th overall.

The team with the best NHL Draft Lottery odds are the Montreal Canadiens, who have a 25.5% chance of picking first overall in the selection show that they will be hosting at the Bell Centre this summer.

The Canadiens are guaranteed to pick in the top three, while the Arizona Coyotes are guaranteed a spot in the top four. The Coyotes have a 13.5% chance of winning the first overall pick, while the Seattle Kraken have an 11.5% chance at that top selection.

The NHL Draft Lottery will begin at 5:30 p.m. Central time, and will air on ESPN in the United States.

The NHL Draft will be held in Montreal, with the first round taking place on July 7 and the final six rounds of the draft taking place on July 8.
